guitar for kids

I think this statement:

I would just buy your kids whatever you can get your hands on. It doesn't really matter, honestly with guitar I wouldn't bother getting a smaller one, maybe with bass though.

is at odds with this one:

Go to pawn shops and find a cheap shitty guitar that plays decently. Doesn't have to sound good at all, I couldn't distinguish good and bad tone when I was first learning because I hadn't developed an ear for it.

replace "plays decently" with "doesn't have any serious problems such as frets that cut your fingers, whacked out neck, faulty wiring etc..."

It should definitely play decently. If it doesn't, the kid's interest may not be sustained in the instrument.

I'd rather get a guitar that plays well from the start than one that doesn't and then have to replace it with one that does.

If a guitar sounds good though, it makes you wanna play it. It doesn't matter if that "playing" only consists of banging on it or not.

I vote that you get a better quality guitar than you think you need.

I know when I was like 13 when I started playing I couldn't tell the difference in sound until about two or three years in, so I don't think sound matters as much, my experience is entirely subjective of course
I could definitely tell a difference in playability though

Yeah, I agree with you to some extent.

The way it sounds may not matter as much as playability, but it does matter.

Hopefully the more money spent, the more playable it is, the better it sounds.
