I've only read about the guitarist using a Fuzz-Tone, does a bass through one sound like this? The bassist talks about cranking his amp, obviously, but doesn't name said amp

Pretty sure the bassist used a Fuzz-Tone too. They're pretty versatile. He definitely used some sort of fuzz pedal.

also (don't quote me on this!) wasn't there a Gibson bass with an FZ-1 built into it? surely the Monks would have wanted one of these?!

Damn, Ian, I just quoted you on this.
Yes, there was. I think they offered both the EB-0 and the EB-3 with built in Fuzz-Tone. Those models had an "F" suffix.
