The Monks sound
So the have this song that I'm not really worried about the fuzz however, the guitar makes this weird synthesque sound after the fuzz part and I want it! Don't know what he would've used based upon the era. Sounds like a filter sweep of sorts. Maybe a downward envelope...

What part of the song are you talking about?

Re: The Monks sound
Sorry. The beginning. He does a part that is just sliding up the neck with fuzz then he hits clean chords with some effect on it....

I love The Monks.

I can't remember, but I think he used a Maestro FZ-1. It may just be the natural decay of the fuzz?

Or maybe just a volume thing with the fuzz.

Re: The Monks sound
LOVE THIS SONG. And yeah, I'm in the camp of it just being the fuzz making that sound. The bass player is doubling the guitar too maybe? That last ringing note / chord at the very end sounds like 60's trashy octave fuzz to me. And also, I don't think any of the early octave divider / pitch tracking effects were out yet at this time. (I'm thinking of the early EHX stuff, the Conn Multivider, the Maestro Rhythm & Sound, etc.) I could be super wrong though. But lord, I do love a Nugget.

Confirmation (not of the gear used on that particular song, but his gear in general):

Gary Burger wrote: I was using a Gretsch Duo Jet guitar plugged into a Gibson fuzz-tone plugged into a Fender volume/tone pedal plugged into a Vox Super Beatle amp. I could get great, natural feedback out of that arrangement.

More info (saying pretty much the same thing):
http://ugly-things.com/the-monks-monk-time/
Gary Burger wrote: I probably had a Bandmaster Fender. I eventually got a Super Beatle (cabinet), but I had a special amplifier. I just used the speaker on that, I had a real high-power amp driving it. That particular amp had been modified so many times, I don’t know what it had in it! (laughs) I’d bought it from a German guy who made amps over there. It really had a crystal clear, super high-end tone to it. It was good for some things and bad for other things, but one thing it would really do would be it would feedback.
Fuzztones were also a big part of our deal, which would help with the sound. We bought a case of those Gibson fuzz-tones out of the StatES: it was like twelve fuzztones. I burnt them all up over a couple of years.
I also used a foot pedal a lot; a volume-tone foot pedal. It was a Fender, I believe. It was the kind that went sideways, up and down. I used that on “I Hate You” and “Love Came Tumbling Down” on the album.

Yeah, I'd like to be buying my fuzz by the case.

A Case Of Fuzz Tones really would make a good band name. if i didn't have two band names in reserve, i'd think of copping it.

Jesus these guys are a revelation. The fuzz bass on Pretty Suzanne (the bonus track version) is some of the best I've heard, probably just kicked NIB off my bonerthrone
