Maybe I should go back to an earlier idea I had of getting one or two humbucker-sized "p90s."

If you decide to go the GFS route, here's a discount code!

From now until Midnight on Labor Day use the following codes:

LABOR2012 - For %15 Percent Off All GFS Pickups.
Special low-frequency version.

This right here was all the evidence i needed to get a set of HB sized P-90's. I may have a slight obsession with SOMA. And i get to see them this friday in a max occupancy 200 club :animal:

Baritone guitars, funnily enough, don't always work for Doom—at least in my opinion. They can become too piano-like and clean. Part of the Doom sound is a short scale guitar tuned down to C, a tuning something like the Les Paul isn't really designed for. I personally love the sound of a baritone, but I would generally prefer a shorter scale like a Gibson, PRS or Fender.

I've been thinking of popping a humbucker-sized P90 in the bridge of my Burny LP, mostly for doomy/sludgy/etc hijinks. Any recommendations? The GFS Mean 90 is cheap enough to be worth taking a risk on (well, as long as shipping isn't too expensive) but yeah, any other humbucker-sized P90s I should check out?

I've heard good things about the Harmonic Design Z-90s?

If you have the money, the Bareknuckle Mississippi Queen P90's are very nice. They have a thickness to them that makes you feel like a badass. You can custom make any of the P90's to fit inside a humbucker enclosure, so that's not your only option. I don't think I've ever tried a Bareknuckle pick-up I didn't like. They're a great company. Some might say they're over-hyped, but they just tick all the right boxes. The only thing they could work on is lowering the prices, but you can't expect that to happen with today's economy climate.

If you're in the States, check out Wolfetone Pick-ups P90 models. They have three versions, Mean, Meaner and Meanest. They're another well-rounded company with solid customer services and customization options. Motor City pick-ups are another one to consider. I haven't tried those guys, but Mark, the guy behind Black Arts Toneworks, says they're great. BG Pups are another popular brand, as are Rio Grande, Kent Armstrong, Frallin, and Lollar.

I'd say that if you're in the UK, save up for a set of Bareknuckle's, At-The-Creamery, or Bulldog pick-ups. If you're in Europe, check out SP Custom from France. And if you're in American, check out Wolfetone and BG Pups for a bit more grunt, and Lollar and Fralin for a little more vintage voice.

My Jazzmaster is now officially a Baritone with Jazzmaster single coils, and it is set up in B. It sounds amazing. Thick, while still being clear:

Thanks for the input! I'm in Malaysia, though, so will have to add shipping—and a week-long/two week-long wait—either way. But yeah I get 20% off of the price of Bareknuckles since I'm not in the UK/EU and don't have to pay VAT, which is nice. It doesn't make them cheap, but I do save a bit, which is always nice. About the same price as the Lollar and Fralin options that way.

The BG Pups Pure 90 also looks interesting, although part of the appeal might be the fact that it's also noticeably cheaper than most of the other pickups you brought up.

Whoops. Missed your post somehow. It's a G&L (ex) Comanche. I still have the loaded pick guard with the z-coils, which is what sparked this whole thread. Swamp ash, strat-style body. I have gibson 490R and 500T in it right now.
