PS - I have no comprehensive knowledge of RAT's, but I have a Jerms '78 RAT clone, and that thing sounds goooooood.

Love my 91-92-ish "big box" reissue with LM308. For me, it does everything requested by OP.
For me, less knobs is better than Inventoboxing the thing. I don't like the Ruetz mod, either, so I don't see improving on the clasic three-knob-and-bypass form.

Saw this on the Fuzzrocious Pedals' Facebook wall... dunno if it's the PERFECT Rat, but it has a whole lot of knobs... which is the traditional ILF definition of "perfect."

- That's a whooooooole lotta rat

I kinda agree. I feel like you might as well just turn the gain down instead of using the ruetz mod. Having a diode switch on the other hand is really cool and useful.

Well, yeah, I would give diode switching a try.

I made a couple with the Madbean "Slow Loris" PCB and you could toggle between the regular 1N914, no clipping diodes, and LEDs. With no clipping diodes you get a much cleaner sound so that adds a lot of versatility. I could do without the Ruetz knob though.
