I agree completely about shoegaze needing the bass to hold the walls of swooshing fuzz together; I just think that it needs to be pronounced enough to do as such.
I have only listened to MBV a handful of times, mostly due to this perceived lack of bass (and therefore, coherence), but I will listen again and see.
Maybe I'm just a bass player who expects moar bass?
Yes@DB!

This

then, you say FUCK.
Nah, but, for serious, a good clean tone would really do wonders for shoegaze. Get a Rusty Box.

Clearly. And I want to withdraw my previous comment about chorus. That's really something for the guitarists. Find an amplifier that delivers mucho bass with mucho precision and keep the whole thing running. Whenever I heard
these they were quite awesome. But they are probably either extremely expensive or simply not to get at all in the states.

chorus is used a lot more on bass than you can imagine

a touch of chorus can fatten it up a lot, it's not like the sound will be drowning in cocteau twins, it has to be set so you don't hear it's on until it's off
you can still get a focused bass sound with some parametric EQ

My current quasi-gaze bass rig. We're much more noise rock with a hint of shoegaze/psych
Vintage Modified Jazz bass -> Russian Muff -> TP -> OK -> shitty late 80's Fender 200watt head
Russian Muff is main drive (gain set relatively low for more of a warming of the overall sound rather than fuzzing which brings us to the Torn's Peaker mainly for feedback and chorus sections of the harder songs. The OK is there to add some bass back in to the tone and to roll off some of the TP's highs.
I'll be getting a Fatman V2 soon and will probably re-evaluate how I use all this stuff. Can't really call what we do shoegaze but we have our moments.
This is the band with the previous bassist think he just used a russian muff

Exactly. I wanted a DE twin that was two ruiners, and then I would have bought a Dark Boost. 5XDB=end of earth.

I like my fuzzy shoegaze to have a clean bass and my swirly shoegaze to have a fuzzy bass, so Russian muff>DB and you're set.
And if you want to listen to MBV, look into the pre-Loveless stuff...
