Granular synthesis is definitely one of those things that'll eat your evening before you know it.

Anyone use an virtual string instruments? I really love the strings on the eponymous Haxan Cloak album...not that I necessarily want just straight "I'm trying to fool you as if I really recorded a string quartet" kinda thing but maybe taking that and running it through the sampling software stuff I already have like Omnisphere or The Mangle which have granular capabilities.

In terms of "intentionally fake" strings I like a few tweaked pre sets I have in Crystak, which is a free synth. I also have another synth which came free with my Midi keybouard (I cannot remember the name off the top of my head) that has a lot of CS80 modelled stuff including kind of faux-strings. Also, there is a MAX instrument floating around called Kasio (Can you guess it's heritage hehe) that does stringy stuff if you tweak it, but it's definitely on the "thats a synth" sounding side of things. THat only works if you run ableton though I can't remember what you may have mentioned above.
But yeah I typically use any of them for "bullshit strings". And then I mangle them.

What type of computer would I need to run this stuff? Like would it be possible to pick up a super cheap laptop/netbook and strip it and only upgrade what I need? I'm looking to do mainly granular processing and live drone sorta things mixed with some live instruments.

What stuff are you talking about?
edit: if you're talking about live synthesis + processing from a laptop (rather than just having something play back what you've already created) then cheap doesn't really enter into the equation, brah.

Mostly Audiomulch from what I'm looking at. Ableton doesn't interest me because of the cost and the fact that I'd need another/new computer to run it.D.o.S. wrote:What stuff are you talking about?

Um, I had no idea this was in the works, but just got this in my inbox. I will definitely be forking out the hundo for the upgrade.

Native's support + stablity has always been dodgy to me.

Never have had any problems with the stability. Support's been a little slow to respond a couple times, but I've never had any trouble ultimately figuring out what was wrong. Generally pretty a-ok in my book, but obv not gonna be the same for everyone. Hardly ever is.

Welp, not a lot of love for Reaktor I guess. But for anyone who didn't feel compelled to check out the link, they've redesigned the interface significantly, ending up with something that looks a lot more modular a la Eurorack.
Plenty of ambient drone fun to be had on Reaktor 5—I'd imagine this opens the door up to a bit more.

Yeah if it works for you I'm sure it'll be great. I want to say Deltz had a Maschine for a bit but idk if that was actually him (I've already confused UC and Eiwind today so I'm off to a bad start when it comes to telling ILFers apart today).
Also new collabo album coming down the pipe that has Ableton Drones all over it (and guitar, too). Hype.
