DIRT

Post by Seten »

I'm trying to figure out my dirt section. The problem is, I gotta get stuff that sounds good on bass and guitar. I'm only with an actual band playing bass, so I guess that's the priority, but I'm doing a solo recording project with guitar too. Right now, I got a TAFM, Grey Stache, and an Ultimate Drive (OCD clone). I've also tried a blower box, which was cool and I'd like to try another rat style distorition in the future, but not a priority for me.

Ideally, I'd cover all my needs with 3 pedals, but I wouldn't object to going with 4. I'm thinking a simple overdrive (low-med gain), a nice warm fuzz (mid gain?), and an octave fuzz that can cut through a mix on bass but isn't too harsh.

For the OD, I was thinking I'd keep the Ultimate Drive until I can upgrade to a Fuzzrocious demon, or alternatively I could try an OCD or something else like a fairfield barbershop. I like the idea of the Demon so I can get a 2nd gain mod and keep one as an almost always on low gain and then get a nice med gain or even a high gain on the 2nd setting.

For the "warm" fuzz, right now I'm thinking I'll keep the grey stache unless I can find something else I like better. I have the diode switch and usually keep it on silicone for warmer sound or no diodes for a harsher sound.

For the octave fuzz I have no idea what to do. Bassmaster clone (diabolik, b:assmaster, etc), Buzzzz, superfuzz, I don't know.

Finally, I might end up getting something else for a 4th dirt, maybe a Mini or a Fuck, maybe another rat style distortion, I don't know.

Ideas/suggestions/comments?

Ghost Effects Warmjet V bass version. Slays on guitar and bass, with bias control you have a very versatile fuzz. He is alo making a bass version of the Pepbox too if you like a More gated fuzz.

I scored mine second hand, I'd recommend sending a pm to ian at ghost effects for info, he's a member and has a sub forum here in the shark tank. I think I just saw a bass version of the pepbox on eBay, I think Ian is selling it with no reserve...

Octave fuzz that works on bass: step right up and grab yourself an Ampeg Scrambler clone. Clean blend beloved of bass players since the stone age.

IdiotBox Effects Static Fuzz. Great on guitar, even better on bass. Very tweakable and has a unique character. Also going to recommend the Ampeg Scrambler clone as rfurtkamp mentioned above is awesome for guitar and bass. Zvex Wooly Mammoth is also a good choice for guitar or bass. If you want something real crazy then get a Crowther Audio Prunes & Custard. It's a Harmonic Generator Intermodulator whatever means, but there are some really cool sound inside for guitar and bass.

OCD is a great sounding pedal.

You should look at the elements because
A) I always say this so I'm obliged to say it
B) you can control the amount of bass that hits the gain stage(s), meaning you can have it wide open for bass then flip a toggle and tighten it up for guitar.
C) it has a clean blend. I'm told bassists like these. On guitar it is great if you want to stack shit. Let's you stack more stuff and maintain some clarity.
D) when you realise that you need to palm mute the fuck out of something you're covered.

Rusty Box or Boxidizer for the clang or "normal" overdrive. Rusty is probably better suited for bass but I've tried my boxidizer with bass before and it sounded fine.

Octave stuff I agree with the scrambler suggestions. Fender Blender might be good too if you can snag a cheap one. That thing is all sorts of fucked up.

Yea, Blender is glorious, I don't usually recommend it as a starter octave because...well...it has no subtle or anything short of kill.

Joyo Voodoo Octave is a pretty good cheap octave fuzz that also gets heavy on the non octave setting? I'd definitely go with either a mini/fuck or a rat for the OD section I use both on literally every instrument I own and they sound great.

I have one of the Joyos (while it was still pre-C&D from Fulltone as the "Ultimate Octave").

It's not that hot on bass IMO.
