how'd they do that?
i'm terrible at this game, there is so much tasty fuzz on this track but was wondering what you thought of how they got this cool tremolo effect at 1:16 for instance. how would you replicate that? just wammy bar down?

yeah just sounds like choppy & fast tremolo with some bending on a vibrato bar

Sonar was under my radar, listened to some clips and it seems like a pretty fun pedal. Yeah I think it's just whammy bar action too. Cool sounding.

Sonar is badass. The Machine circuit makes it MEAN.

can you just ask Jim over on Stomboxes? Sounds like a choppy trem with a dropping tremolo arm to my ears, though.

I know Jim Roth still uses an Empress tremolo and that Doug at least used to have one on his board, so my guess is that it's still that trem + whammy bar awesomeness.

I've been listening to this album non-stop since I got it! I watched a KEXP live video and Doug definitely had a tremolo going as well. No idea who is making what noises though!

Re: how'd they do that?
Like everyone else has said, I think it is tremolo pedal and whammy bar. I did (well, I think), hear some unison bends that seem to sound very similar to the trem. On the swell back up on the part you mention there could be some mellow wah or phase or something layered on top (or maybe it is just whammy bar + a volume pedal?). There is a lot of studio layering too. I think a lot of the fuzz sounds are just amp (maybe with an overdrive) except for the lower really fuzzy sounds...
At least from what I hear...probably wrong.
