Yes.
If JCM800 50 or 100 watt, try the low input. Especially one with 6550 power tubes.
JMPs and JTMs/4holers you have numerous options. Jumper the channels and prepare for dem toanz.

Not much of a fan of the 900 and after.

Oh yeah, that JCM800 had 6550s in it as well. I was always telling him to put EL34s in it but the tracks are of it still loaded with 6550s. I wouldn't change anything.

An 800 with single coils dialed in just right is sooooo sweet. I tracked the guitars, bass and vocals for my friend's EP, his Ric and 800 made for the best sounding chiming guitars on the rhythm tracks.

I second the Laney AOR.... I use my AOR50 for mainly cleans/edge of breakup stuff, low input is great cranked or low pre-amp gain in high input, and these amps are seriously cheap, especially the combos since they look so heinous but you can just rehouse them into a head or new combo + they have a decent on board reverb.

Dude, old Marshall Plexi's are amazing clean.
I have a 2061X, it's got a surprising amount of headroom for only a 20 watt amp.
A bonus is that a great Marshall just takes dirt pedals really well and always makes it rock.

I think the pre-amp gain was set right on the edge of breakup. And the bass knob was turned up pretty high.

Same setup with less pre-amp gain would do that. Don't overthink it.

ii just associate 6L6's with big fat cleans from like, fender amps. i always associated EL34's with brash mids heavy british distortion so, yeah. i dunno. obviously im a dumb dumb.

Me too, but on reflection I'd be willing to bet my pants that it is more to do with the typical fender/Marshall preamps and the typical fender/Marshall tonestacks than the actual tubes. Disregarding differences in output I don't know if there's that much difference in the actual sound of the tubes.

I know that it ain't the tubes per se. tubes don't have a "sound".

my band recently added a third guitarist and he plays a JCM800 clean and its actually really nice. he needs to temper his treble a bit but other than that it sounds really cool. great contrast with my super reverb and my bandmates music man 65 combo.
