Let's see your PICK!

Post by intrepido »

Hi there. Following other very informative topics about what we use to play: gtr, amp, fxs, I think it's time to "fill the gap" and talk about PICKS! I believe this is a much underrated aspect of playing and a hot argument to discuss here. I'm a semi-pro 30+ guitar player and for decades I used Fender and Gibson "mediums", switching occasionaly to some "heavies" (matching a stronger string gauge). But few years ago I gave a try to small 2mm (red) and 3mm (purple) "Stubbies" (see picture) and I found them to be very good for fast runs rather than complex rhythm parts. I hold the pick "normally" (no weird postures) and straight, i.e. pointing the vertex of the pick through the strings. That's it for now.
So please, I'll be very grateful to hear from you.
Thanks a lot and sorry for my sloppy English and the crappy photo... :)*

Very good start! But please, tell us what music do you play and, if you wish, which string gauge do you use with a particular pick :))

These purple ones on top

Always good for tremolo picking, turn them upside-down and you get instant coxon.
I'm not particularly picky when it comes to strings, but I play 10s usually.

I use the purple stubbies in the OP. Lately, I've been playing DR Black Beauties both 4 and 5-string heavies: .050 .070 .090 .110 .130

i prefer electro-harmonix .010s but if i cant get them i use dr tite fit .010s. unless i am using flat wounds then it is d'addario chromes .011s. unless i am playing the 10 string then its d'addario xl150 i think. they are the 12 string set with .010s on the high e.

you can hear the pick and 10 string in action http://www.myspace.com/owlcambridge

Left pick is a Dunlop Tortex .73mm
Right pick is a Wegen 7.00mm

The Tortex brings a brighter sound than the 7, but the 7 is a bit easier for me to grip and is good with chords. I also like the darker sound of the 7, but I practice with both whenever I can.

I FUCKING LOVE PLECTRUMS & PYRAMIDS.
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

Current ILF Love: OHNOHO CHK CHK BOOM, Mellowtone Melx Fuzz 2, EQD Dream Crusher, Devi Ever ID, Dr. Scientist Proto-Miniberator - new vids eventually

Dunlop 0.71mm Delrin (the glossy kind)
It's my favorite. Plus they're easy to find because they're bright lol

I prefer the tortex .88 but the vpicks are growing on me. They are very comfortable and DO sound different.

Ernie Ball heavy bottoms or power.

(power bottoms?)
