I used to like Russian Circles - I liked Enter, like many others, and though their other stuff after was good but after the Station it was all more or less the same stuff.

I like Pelican; Australasia, Fire in Our Throats, and City of Echoes. COE is kind of fun in that they went more kind of happy/poppy in addition to the metalish kind of riffs.

Aurora Borealis is a great song. I might just be easily swayed but some of that stuff.

I saw Pelican with Daughters opening and after Daughters played it was like "what is the point?"

Mono, I like their stuff, some stuff is really good, other stuff just goes on way too long.

Pop-punk is supposed to be stupid bullshit and fun. If you're going to make super long songs with intricate sessions at least give a shit.

I think he does he's just decided that playing loud bits when everyone else is playing softly and playing softly when everyone else is playing loudly is the way to go.

Ah, I remember talking about this on Oink's Pink Palace forums (RIP). Larry Herwig is the most endearingly awful drummer in all of rock and metal. He does not keep time with the band, and often changes rhythm in the middle of a bar, just to catch up with them. He also potentially has no idea what dynamics really are (as D.o.S. alluded to). But if you didn't have him there, Pelican would not be as good as they are, because his relative (or, perceived) lack of skill is a huge part of their sound.

I call them "Meg White" drummers, that is, not very good, but in a unique way. Jack White tried to form The White Stripes with different drummers and failed. Sometimes chemistry trumps musical ability. In sludge, pretty much always!

This is rarely the case in pop-punk. Pop-punk is not a genre based on originality. Like blues, it's about firing out the established riffs and tropes faster and tighter than before. Hence why the genre gives us human drum machines like Travis Barker (Blink 182), Aaron Gillespie (Underoath), and Coby Linder (Say Anything). The best pop-punk bands are the ones where you leave the show and you're like, "Shit, that was tight!" (recent personal example, Modern Baseball; recent general example, The Wonder Years).
