yeah but putting things on to the sampler from computer = not having to worry about plugging a laptop into my pedals.

Woah, cheers for mentioning Audio Mulch. Gonna be a lot of fun chucking bits from there into other samplers and things.
For samplers, I mainly use kontakt, bc that's where most of my libs are at, but been demoing Redux, it has some pretty nice stuff going.

Redux is really exciting. I've been using its big brother Renoise for like 8 years now, but I'm a tracker guy so it's very natural to me. I would definitely use Redux if I liked sequencing in DAW environments more.kralc wrote:Woah, cheers for mentioning Audio Mulch. This uber relevant to what kind of music I do!
I'm also an Audiomulch user: granular synthesis + reverb + delays seems to be the way that Hecker/Frost do things.
They also use a lot of external to In the box prod to external to finally rerecord things in the box. (Tape deck, re-amping..)
Sidechain comp on field recordings are used a lot too
Here it's a free Frost Live set from Ableton: http://www.ableton.com/en/blog/ben-frost-livepack/
There are some things to learn from this live set

V. Cool. Thanks for that.
I should probably listen to Ben Frost and/or Tim Hecker at some point. Recommendations?

Re: Computer based ambient drone: Tim Hecker, Ben Frost etc.
I was actually thinking about hooking up some of my pedals on busses/auxiliaries with my recordings. I don't have any software reverbs that compare to my Eventide Space and I've got an Echoplex and Fender Reverb tank I rarely use so I figured they could be useful that way. I feel like the financial black hole of gear purchasing is only exponentially growing as I get older.Glace_Noire wrote:This uber relevant to what kind of music I do!![]()

Tim Hecker - Virgins
Ben Frost - A U R O R A
The other recommendations above are good, but I'd argue starting at their newest albums would be more worth while for you.
BY THE THROAT has awesome sonics but can be a little too psuedo classical at times. A U R O R A is way more rhythimc and driving.
Ravedeath is really washy and distorted and consuming, which can be a positive or negative depending on how you're feeling at that moment. Virgins has way less verb/typical dark ambient elements and is crafted really well, arguably his most interesting composition.

man believe me I ain't tryin to knock hecker's shit but Virgins was so boring for me..maybe it's because I've been going absolutely bonkers with stereo granular synthesis or whatever..but that album just made me want to open audiomulch and fuck around myself
i'm glad i can call you a friend. even if i'll never see you again

Cool stuff in your sig. I'm also in Alameda. Small world.louderthangod wrote:What are some good sampling programs? Something where I can pull audio and manipulate it a bit.
Edit*** Been playing with Audiomulch - very cool and easy to use, at least to start making sounds.

I don't know if I've missed the boat on this, but if you're still willing to elaborate a bit on how to get started with PPOOLL, I'd really appreciate it. I have it running in the Max 6 runtime, and I can seem to get noises to come out of it, but I've been fumbling around in the dark with it on and off for the past month. Aside from loading a sample or making monotone noises, I'm kinda hopeless. I can tell it yields a lot of irreplaceable value, but I can't really figure it out, and it's killing me that it's so unapproachable to me.rainlet wrote:ppooll is a set of instruments, effects and helper modules built in Max/MSP. Also, it'll run native plugins (I can only seem to get AU to work on Mac, I've gotten VST to work on Windows). It runs in the (free) Max Runtime, which means it's a standalone thing, you don't need Ableton or anything else to use it. This also means that if you're a Max guy, you can write your own acts (ppooll's name for its modules) to add your own capabilities to ppooll. If there's interest, I can try to whip up some sort of effortpost about how to get started using ppooll. I won't say that I'm an expert, but I can tell you enough to get the ball rolling.I just googled ppooll and the first two pages broke my brain. I have no idea what's going on...to quote Bill Hicks, it's like showing a dog a card trick. Is it a program I can use like a plugin or is a community of people sharing things they've made?
I've dusted over the "quick and dirty guide" for its earlier LLOOPP incarnation, and I've tried to decode the native info files, but it's all Greek to me.
Any insights you can offer would be greatly appreciated for me.
Cheers!
