Switching between different capacitors, advice needed.

Post by KaosCill8r »

Hey guys, I'm working on a little project and wondering if this would work.

If I were take a dpdt on off on toggle switch and solder my signal in and out wire to the centre 2 poles along with a .22uf cap.
Then add a .47uf cap to the outer two switch poles and a .10uf cap to the other two outer switch poles. Would I get the signal passing through the .22 cap only in the centre switch position, then .69uf(.47uf+.22uf)by switching to the .47uf cap side of the switch position and .32uf (.22uf+.10uf) by switching to the .10uf switch position?

Does what I'm writing make sense?

I think it should work. Caps in parallel are additive, right?

Yes, it works well, and means you can solder the added caps solidly to the switch lugs and have the "always in" cap to the board and just run two wires from that cap to the switch. You can even accomplish this parallel switching with a single pole, double throw switch: if you have a dpdt switch already, you could use one pole to switch input cap values and the other pole for another set of alternatives in parallel with the output cap.

Thanks guys, I thought it would work. Just needed clarification before I committed to solder.
