Gimmicks for live shows! what's yours?

Currently I play in a grind band that more people like for our singer's drunken ranting and abuse of the audience and rest of his band between songs than the actual music. Which I mean, to be fair, it is definitely the best part of our show. We've been talking about getting him to pre-record his standup routine onto a sampler and just press the buttons rather than say anything between songs. I'd like to even make a recording of him talking shit and splice it in with the couple of 7"s we've just recorded and 'play' a set where we just play that through the PA and sit on stage eating burritos and staring at people.

also looking super lost in the moment yet concerned (I have a sort of grim playing face i guess) and not having much contact with the audience works for me as well

Gimmick was pretty much maximum audience interaction. Not so revolutionary, but Glasgow in 2005/6 was consumed with Franz Ferdinand art-school cool, legions of aloof, stock-still, glazed-over guitarists with their perfunctory post-punk chops. We're up here wearing leather and playing 2 songs 5 times and you're down there pretending to care. I'm surprised Domino didn't just sign every damn band in the city.

So yeah, if you go back to the mid to late 00s, leap in the crowd, give kids your guitar during songs and hug everyone, you'll have a very real great time.

I just wear some kind of headgear that blocks out the audience/my face and look down for 95% of the show. It's not to be a gimmicky shigæizer, I'm just a shy dude. I focus more on what I'm doing that way.

I get flak for not being very "animated" when playing live, but playing guitar right is hard and I'd rather sound right than act how people think I should.

Much respect for people that manage to do it all, the antics and the music.
