ok i'm on the market for cheap basses and although i've had bad experiences with squier in the past i'm considering a squier bass because they're relatively cheap
can anyone attest to the quality of squier basses (specifically the affinity j-bass) or should i just go for something else?

i have a 50s classic vibe tele that is very nice and i have heard very good things about the classic vibe basses. the 50's cv p-bass is hot as is the 60's jazz!!! they are 350 new so they are a bit more than the affinity series.
if you dont mind semi-hollows i got a great deal on an ibanez artcore asb140, i think it is a 140, and it sounds and plays great. you might be able to find them on ebay for around 2 to 3 hundo...
I play an American Standard P-bass, but while I was shopping for it I met a guy who says that he loves Squier basses. He said he'd gigged over 100 basses in his life so that bodes well for you.
I would say that you if you are going for a Squier, play a lot of them first. Some will have "rough edges." Some will have clicky, loose necks. Some will sound dead compared to others. If you play enough of them, you are sure to find a smokin' hot one with a good build, good sustain and great pickups. Just don't buy one of the first 10 you try out.
The vintage vibe and vintage modified Squires have gotten great reviews over on Talkbass.
I tried one of the Vintage Vibe Jazz basses , which played and sounded better than many of the MIM and MIJ Fenders in the shop at the time. I’d buy one of those before accepting a Geddy Lee signature as a gift.
I am awaiting a Classic Vibe Jazz bass which I fell in love with when I tried... I'm getting a used one as to save a few clams, but for the money, squire basses are amazing, the QC, Materials and workmanship surpass the MIM series Fenders and almost touch the MIA/MIJ Fenders.

The Affinity series basses are crap, I'd get a classic vibe or at least a standard. Second hand standards usually goes pretty cheap if your really strapped.
I just got a vintage Modified Jazz bass and it's great. but I agree that you need to check out a few before you find a good one. I shopped around till I found a good one. They need a setup to play well but other than that it's a great bass for 300 bucks.

I dig my Vintage Modified Tele bass quite a lot. The neck is fantastic. My only thing is that it doesn't sound as "alive" as it probably could, but the neck seems exactly like the Mighty Mite neck I have-- down to every detail (except shape).
I'd say shop around. I didn't like the P bass I played so much, but the Jazz was awesome. It might just be that I like maple fretboards.
Anywho, another brand that gets a lot of praise from Talkbass is SX. I've owned 3, and all were pretty good. The finishes on them aren't as good as Squier (who I think puts it on a bit thick), but the woods seem more resonant and more "alive." The necks put me off now, though. They're a bit flat for my liking.
