Want to venture into new amp territory.

Post by scienceman »

In every band I've been in for the last few years I've used a deluxe reverb. And no matter what I do, my sound gets burried in the mix even if I boost mids with my talons. I want a loud stack to replace the deluxe and have been looking at silverface bassman stacks.
But I think I might wanna get away from fender and check out British flavored amps that might cut more. The problem is that all the British amps I've tried (some vox and marshals) don't work with fuzz. So is there any amps that cut and also sound good with fuzz pedals?
I'm looking at stuff like laney aor, gh100l, and migs. I'm also worried about the reliability of amps like those.
And I should say I'm probably only gonna spend around $600 on the head so I'll have enought cash for a cab.

Get this. Unf. Fender loves fuzz.

I'd consider getting it if I wasn't 85% of the way done overhauling my Vibrolux Reverb

That's exactly why I asked here. Every time I see an amp that will work it costs way too much.

Yeah sorry not tryna be a dick...

From the "more affordable" file, look for old Traynor YBA (Bass Master) and Univox amps... a lot of those fall in-between Fender and Marshall tones (specifically, between the Bassman and the JMP)...

Also keep an eye out for something like a Music Man HD-130... prices on those are creeping up but still within your budget, and they fit the bill...

I saw a traynor YBA200 the other day for about $500. It was a new one though so i wasn't sure if it would be good on guitar. I'll have to look into that more.

Yeah, YBA-3 should do nicely. I just picked one up two weeks ago. :thumb:

Can you hear me now? :poke:

Got it for $400, with new matched quad EL34 set, and some of the caps were new too. I replaced the power caps, added variable bias, and a couple of resistor tweaks, add $25.

I'm feeling like...

On the SS side, an Ampeg G-212 can do some serious damage as well. It's a 2x12 combo, but man... it can project. Plays nice with pedals too. Anything past 4 on the volume ensures a quick visit from the local constabulary.

Either way, both are solid amps, I would say the Traynor more so. It's built like a tank.

I have a YBA-3 as well and its fuckin solid. Really versatile tonal range and works great on guitar and bass. And takes dirt like a champ. Everything sounds so meaty and huge through it, even at lower volumes.

I might be in the minority here but I'd try out some Marshalls. I see so many bands with every sound imaginable that get it through marshalls. I'd just hunt around and find a great deal on a used one somewhere. There are so many that you can totally find deals. Around here I pretty frequently see great prices on the little 2x12 combo amps. Not exactly what you're looking for, but there is a used music store here in town that has 2x12 combos cheaper than the head only version of the same amp. I'm sure it depends what is in your area, but why not take a good hard looksy :idk:

Hey dude, I played in some bands with a Silverface Bassman 100. Loud and heavy with a 4x12. Blending the Bass channel and the Guitar channel can give some interesting tones, but ultimately its specialty is being a super great clean and pedal platform. I think the Silverface Bassman is a tremendous value in amps.

The Bassman heads are worlds, worlds apart from 6V6 Fender stuff.

They'll also be a much, much easier flip if you're not happy.

Stick with the big brands unless you get a SMOKIN' deal.

As much as I love big bottle Fender amps, everyone should have a Marshall once in their life at least.

Go shopping, see what jumps out at you.
