I'm leaning more towards the dirty boost rather than total fuzz meltdown and a speaker cranker
is on the short list as is a fuzz face or something.
I really am looking to add to the organ sound of the Opus 3 not disguise it.

Cool... I'm curious as to how the Opus 3's volume output would interact with a Fuzz Face—might be totally different since that's generated by oscillators, no? I'm sure it'd probably still sound pretty cool. If it didn't have that volume knob type of cleanup, you could always try the route that few people seem to do with a FF... turning the fuzz down on the pedal ;)

My only beef with the Speaker Cranker is that due to the one knob nature of it, you get a volume increase in addition to added gain. It's an all around great sounding pedal, but sometimes I wish I could use some of the grittier settings without a big ass volume boost.

When running the Opus through pedals, it's wise to keep the master volume down at around 12 o'clock or so.
It has a stereo (dual) output option and a mono output as well. I actually run out of all three and back into
a mini-mixer (that has 3 stereo/ left-right inputs and a stereo out) so you can run a bunch of different effects, bring them in and
out and have a stereo effect. It can make for some real psychedelic jams. When running all 3 though, the mono output
definitely suffers volume-wise (I'm sure you're not really supposed to do this but …..)
Anyway, I run one channel through a Moog MF drive into a stereo delay, the 2nd channel into another delay and then a stereo reverb and the mono channel
into a panning tremolo. I want the fuzz/ overdrive for that panning tremolo, to give it different character from the other two….
I've used a Supa Tone (which I just sold) but it was so grindy. I've also messed around with running reverb, filters and compressors before the tremolo too…

Yeah if you're using the stereo outs the mono seems to suffer... If you're going into a mixer as opposed to an amp most dirt is gonna sound like crap anyway unless you use something that can cab sim... Just get a bunch of cheap dirts and experiment... The bass big muff has options that might work for you... Also I got a DS-1 and Grunge to sound good on my Opus but I was going mono out to a bass rig...

Look up Jonti on Stones Throw, he's an Opus III Wizard...

I don't know why I didn't think about this earlier when I was lamenting the super simplistic controls of the Speaker Cranker, but... the Lotus Snow Job falls into the same ballpark and is a bit more versatile, so it might be worth a look for you. It's good at adding some nice gain/sparkle without compressing too much. Then the yellow snow mode goes a little hairier, squishes things a bit more. I like mine a lot, just haven't owned it long enough to put it to regular use.

Even with Rhodes-type devices, the circuit would have to be conducive to getting to it.

That said, *some* effects units give lower gain simply when hit with lower input, where it's not impedance-related.

Yeah I would think it would be more likely to work with a passive Rhodes like mine - the stage piano vs. the suitcase. Was just thinking what most closely resembles the pickup-to-output circuit of a guitar.

Haha this is all just speculation on my part at this point, though. I need to shut up and try it.

Ok, couldn't resist testing it out before I get to work. Really quickly done, levels might be horsey because the Rhodes is in a different room and I had to just sorta play with the levels without seeing them to get it sounding right. Yeah the Rhodes makes a lot of weird sub-noises, but I think that's one of the things that's awesome about it.

Works just like a guitar volume knob! (as I expected, since the passive circuit on the MKI Stage Piano's probably pretty similar to a guitar's)

70s Rhodes MKI Stage PIano > Analog Man NKT Sun Face (fuzz at about 80%, level adjusted a bit throughout) > Subdecay SST > Matchless Chieftain 2x12 > SM57 > LA610 w/compression bypassed > Logic

I started out with the FF off, then you can hear me click it on. Turned the Rhodes volume down to about half, then you can hear me turning it up and down a couple times throughout the rest of the clip.

The keyboard, at least at the start, is playing the main riff, which is one of the most glorious as much distortion as you can muster riffs of all time.

Glad it worked. Will have to test the same gear with a non-Rhodes, regular electronicy keyboard and see how it reacts for comparison.

Could be the pedal reacting to input levels as well, I have a couple that do even far, far down the chain or after rack stuff.
