BOSS SY-300
So I guess this exists now?

Demo guy doesn't seem to know how to make it do anything cool but it seems like it could be really interesting. Good tracking and parallel effects make this really appealing to me.
That squarewavey sequencer thing at the end hints toward some sounds I'd like to play with.

Hoping that it'll end up crashing so I can pick it up at low low prices. I'm betting there's some interesting shit in there (or at least plenty of things to break) that the demo guys haven't been hitting.

Re: BOSS SY-300
I'm hoping it just plain doesn't suck and is more a victim of "guitarcentric" playing bias. What I'm talking baout has been a problem with guitar synth since the beginning. Guitarists are used to playing guitar and despite what we tell ourselves about "but I play in an unguitaritic manner".
So how a synthesizer handles differently from guitar can be really offputting to guitarists. I think there's a lot of compromise (and I've owned quite a few of them) with guitar synth and some aren't willing to give up what they have to for the compromise
I'm not saying it's a bad thing or a weak point of guitarists. If the concessions are too much and get in the way of your expression and you lose too much in the trade-of, then so be it -- ditch it.
It's just something we have to be aware of.

Re: BOSS SY-300
Disclaimer: I play bass.
I had one. It was a little buzzy sounding and requires a little bit of filtering (built in) to tone it down, not a big deal. It does some great trippy/ambient/swell/pad stuff, I couldn't dial in punchy enough sounds for fast articulate playing (on bass). I did try numerous input sensitivity settings but could never get the attack hard enough without dialing in cleans. Dialing in cleans for punch creates a new problem though with some patches sounding more dissonant when blended with clean tone. The tracking is amazing but even with the near instant tracking the oscillators have a bit of a ramp up to full amplitude on them, which makes them not quite punchy enough for my tastes.

55 tracks as fast as I can play, which is pretty damn fast.tuj wrote:The good 'ole GR300 sounds like it is still the winner for tracking speed.
And the 300 emulator in it is stupid, stupid fast (one of the COSM-based models)

The SY-300 isn't cosm. Although it might sound like it is.sonidero wrote:If you can't dial in a cosm you can't dial...

And it sounds like you are saying that I gave up too easily, do you own one?
At any rate, I will keep an eye on the SY-300 as the user base grows and if you or anyone proves me wrong I'll happily buy another. In the meantime I'm quite content to not own a pedal that I can't dial.
