Buildling custom bass cabinets

Post by Strange Tales »

Probably something I can search up on google and have, but I'm really anal about not fucking my shit up.

I'm thinking of rehousing my Peavey 215 into two separate 115 cabs so it'll be tons lighter and a lot easier to load up. I'm assuming this is entire feasible and probably not an issue. My questions are:

80s Peavey Cabs are particle board, right? My friend swears on his life that the wood really makes a difference for cabinets and I tend to trust his opinion on stuff.

What should I get for a speaker jack? My guess is Neutrik but ya know, gotta cover all basses.

Ported vs. Sealed for mid-range? I'm pretty sure Peavey cabs are ported, but they have some weird ass fucking cuts on the side for porting. Will making sealed cabs provide a better mid-range response without sacrificing low end? If its better to go ported, anyone know what the good cuts are?

It's my understanding that bass cabs are kind of whack and way more finicky than guitar cabs with how pressure effects speaker efficiency and frequency response. But, as always, I could be wrong and just caught up in marketing boogaloo.

From what I've read the TL606 style of bass cab is pretty great for a 115. Never built one but there are plenty of plans online. This style is ported.

If you aren't really that handy, maybe get ILFer Trace to build you an unloaded set. Obviously not as cheap as DIY but definitely get the piece of mind knowing its built correctly.

He actually has one on a loaded one on Reverb right now: https://reverb.com/item/648379-dominion ... oCwF_w_wcB

Damn those are super fucking nice and exactly what I want to go for. The price is a real boner though, not sure how much the speaker hes using adds to the price though, I'll try sending him a pm though, thanks!

I am having those speakers put in my Atlas 215 so I know they cost around $150 brand new.

Found prices on his website. $250 a pop for unloaded enclosures. May just go with that for piece of mind that I'm getting quality shit and just drive down to VA to pick it up myself.

Prices listed are for standard, sealed guitar-style cabinets. Exact dimensions can be specified by customer. Ported cabinets and more complex designs will have an additional cost.
So it might be a bit more if you went for the TL606 style but still not a bad price at all.

Maybe I just haven't done the math on adding speakers to the prices on the dominion site, but it seems really reasonable.

Does anyone have 12 or 15 inch speakers they like both guitar and bass? I'm looking to get a 6x12 or 2x15 if I can figure out a speaker that would make the big cab work for everything.

Edit: actually, I'm very happy with my current 2x12, so there are probably smarter options. Like getting a 1x15 with said speaker that works well for guitar and bass.

Well, I talked to my Dad about this and I think I'm going with his suggestion.

"They're sealed from each other? Fuck it, just cut it in half."

I mean the worse that happens is it doesn't work and you have to do what you originally planned. Good luck!

Haha definitely. I just don't have much money right now and with this I have to glue like one board on top and just connect the speakers. I'm like 80% confident in myself for this job.

ATTEMPT TO HIJACK THREAD IS GO

Does anyone know of any resources that compare the sound characteristics of common bass cab designs? Or how different cab design features affect sound characteristics?

Edit: gotta up my Google game. Reading this: http://www.loudspeakerbuilding.com/Prac ... s/10147,en

Ported cabs can be tricky, they require maths rather than just chucking speakers in a cab like most sealed guitar cabs
