Don't get one of those, they are big, and a pain to maneuver, and are only rated for 250 watts. I never thought that cab sounded good. Maybe that's why they don't make them anymore.
I've heard there are two kinds of PV 2x15, one is a little bit deeper box (so, it has better low end).
For bass, more is better. More power, more cabs, more speakers. Over at Talk Bass they recommend having all your speaker cabs be the same (don't mix speaker sizes). The good part about that is your setup can be modular (small rig for small club, big rig for big club). And you can start with one cab, then buy another if needed.

The difference between the 2x15s are that one is 18" deep and the other is only 12" deep.
Gotta echo that the 1820 doesn't sound so good. Talkbass should be taken with a grain of salt -- although there are a lot of dudes that are really, really knowledgeable and really great players, sometimes stuff just gets parroted around there until it becomes dogma.
i got some bass speakers cheap some 10 and 12 , one was a ev in box i paid 9 for at salvation army ! . i use a 50 x 2 sure class d board with 24 volt lap top power supplys and a vbass rack i paid 30 for . it also runs on sla for outdoors , and we use a zoom b2 . it was REALLY cheap and hackish but has been going strong for a few years . i used crossovers and horns too , all that stuff was recyled goodwill type stuff . i have some 300 watt combo w/15 amps here but this was just a fun diy project . for bass i have always felt you need good speaker with massive magnet / heavy , and then decent cooling for the power amp . but i am not a pro tech or expert and i do things wrong as i enjoy that process .
for what you are trying to do , it isnt going to be cheap to do that right , i am just saying i hacked a set up and it works very well for us . it isnt sub bass / octave though ha haa . that i would say an 18 the two 15's or 4 tens . on the power amp side , you are gonna need a lot .
Try get your hands on an old SWR LA15 combo. 100w solid state, 15"speaker, they sound great, handle fuzz and dirt pedals awesomely, sound great for recording, doesn't take up a lot of floor space, doesn't weigh a great deal, perfect for bedroom playing, jams with mates and can be used for small gigs. Though very small gig like a restaurant or small pub gig. I've had one for about 12 or so years and it's never let me down. Re wrap it with tolex because that fluffy shit they wrap them in is a mold magnet. In cold damp weather like here in the mountains, I have to keep scrubbing mine with vinegar to kill the mold spores. When I get some spare cash I'm going to be wrapping it in snakeskin tolex, because snakeskin is groovy.
Damn dudes, thanks for all the tips. I have been playing bass gear with my P-bass on my lunch hours at work the past few days. Boss Super Octave into Sansamp is sickkkk. I was playing through a Portaflex 500 head into an Ampeg 410 and I was irritating the guitarists on the floor.
It looks like I can get a new Portaflex 500 for under 300 and a used Ampeg 410 cab for 250-350 on guitar centers website. Still open to ideas, my coworker has a Peavey Mark iii he'd sell to me for $150. Anyways, I am pretty excited now that I have made my ideal bass toans.
