Limiter pedal?

Post by neonblack »

I need a way to limit the volume from my chain. I got an rm-1n with the post gain on a footswitch and I didn't think about the volume boost until after it was too late. I'd like a way to keep the volume from jumping up when I kick on the post gain. I know some compressors can do this. Like the accountant maybe? Any cheap options for this? I don't know about a compressor at the end of my chain..

The accountant wouldn't be good as a limiter, you'd need something that has a knob for threshold and ratio, rather than the presets that the accountant has.

I can temp trade/lend you my Wampler Ego to see if a compressor would solve your problems, but I'm not sure how much it would help. :idk:

seriously though, I recommend the Dominator to anyone recording digitally (which is pretty much everyone) as their last rack unit before the A/D converters. The 722 broadcast edition is particularly sweet and both models are zero-overshoot, meaning you can push a pretty hot signal to your converters without worrying really at all about clipping. Thing sounds great...but its rack. I don't know you could squeeze it all in a pedal.

That gave me the idea for a pedal with limited appeal. Digitally controlled true bypass looper that will match the peak volume (or rms) of an FX loop to the peak volume (or rms) of the input signal. The path would be analog, but it would measure the signal digitally because I know very little about how I'd do that fully analog. 2 stomps, one to engage the FX loop, one to reset the measurement.

Yes! And if I want to get really fancy, I could take a split the signal to the FX loop at all times to get a constant read on that prior to engaging, but that would eliminate the true bypass option.

I used to have one. Pretty rare, too, from what I read. My idiot brother . . . :grumpy:

That was my first thought, but I think he needs something that can be set and forget. You would have to adjust the treadle/stomp another switch after engaging the other effect.

Forgot about this thread, shit.

Yeah, something set and forget would be great. I'm worried about a compressor after all my dirt and stuff. Worried it'll make it all squishy and gross.

Might just have to suck it up and either deal with the volume boost or just get a separate clean reverb and keep the rm-1n dirty all the time.

I have a Boss volume pedal with a control that allows you to set the volume of the heel down position anywhere from completely off to very near the full volume/toe down position. Seems like this would work as a set and forget control. Just set your volume where you want it and rock the pedal all the way back to heel down right before you engage your R2D2. You definitely don't want a compressor last in your chain.
