Matsumin Valvecaster build. Completed successfully!!

Post by KaosCill8r »

Hey guys, I'm thinking of building one based on the Beavis Audio's PCB less design which you hard wire the components point to point direct to the valve socket? Am going to be running it off a 12vdc power supply. Will be using last in the chain as a valve booster into my solid state bass amp.

Has anyone here built one from Dano's PCB less design?

Did you change any components or just go with Dano's stock layout?

Did you have any problems that need to be debugged?

What voltage do you run it at?

What rated tube do you run in it?

Is it worth building?

Have you tried it with bass?
Thanks for reading :thumb:

Yes.

I didn't change any values. The only thing you might want to tinker with is the cap on the tone stack, but it sounded okay to me as is.

No.

+12V

Not sure what you mean. But I used a 12AU7, as specified by the project.

I think so. It's definitely an overdrive. If you want high-gain, it's not going to be enough without a booster in front.

I have not.

Here's my build from 2008 (jeez, I'm getting to be old!! )

I also did a PCB for the Valvecaster way back in 2011. Details here:

I just ordered a Tung-Sol 12AU7 valve and a socket to suit. The last pieces of the puzzle. As soon as it gets here I'm ready to start building. :yay: I've decided to build it with a switch for C1 for different input cap options and I'm not going to be using C4 or a tone control.
Thanks for the feedback and advice culturejam. :thumb:

Just finished my Valvecaster build. Turned out very successful. Gave me some nice valve warmth and boost for my sterile solidstate bass amp. I'm thinking of building another one for my guitar board with a clipping circuit.
There is a pic in the Lets see your finished projects thread if you're interested in looking.
