Best small amp?

Post by 777mick777 »

I'm looking for a small amp. Already found these amps that I really like:

- Gretsch g5222
- Fender champ 500
- Fuzzhugger pipe amp

What do you guys like?

I don't know stuff about these amps, so I can't help you really. But for other people to help you, it's generally a good idea to let us know what guitars you use, music you play, which pedals you have, tubes or solid state etc etc. If I was looking for a practice amp I think I'd take a look at the vox pathfinder and then use a pedal for fuzz. But since you seem to want tubes I can't really help you :(

No idea, haven't messed with any of those. Don't know what they cost either. But purely going on looks and the fact that it's NOT a gigantic faceless corporation with shitty customer support:

If you mean the Fender Champ 600, it and the Gretsch g5222 are the same amp except for minor cosmetic differences. I also believe that they are made in China. Go with the something like the third choice, or better yet get a vintage small tube practice amp a'la valco, airline, harmony, kay, etc.

There is a PAIA Pygmy up on ebay right now (or was yesterday). Might be cool.

Silvertone amp-in-a-case were always fun too.

The later version Valve Jr amps were pretty decent. I've had a few and they are great with pedals. And there are a shitload of well-document mods.

I have a Gibson Discoverer on indefinite loan. That is one neat little amp!

like some others mentioned - there is a lot of "it depends"
even how small is small
some of the Puresound (phil jones) stuff is nice -- but it might not be your cup of tea , or it might

Do the LED mod and the Pathfinder opens up for pedals. Also do Tweedbassman's (Matthew of Penny Pedals) trem depth mod, too, since it gives it some real oomph with jus a resistor swap.

I also like the Yamaha JX series combos for home use. Blackface/silverface Fender reverb amp vibe in a solidstate combo that you can usually get for nothing when they turn up.

Been meaning to do both of these, along with one or two other things. Couldn't find the trem mod info. I havent had any issues with it and pedals though, unless the amp gain is high.
