hey there fuzzaholics, greetings and salutations!
i post infrequently, but check in often to see what's cool around here though. love this board.
so i got a question...
i'm not a builder and have limited understanding on how/what gives a dirt box its characteristic sounds.
i can distinguish a classic germanium sound from a silicon from a muff type from an ic muff type from a squelchy superfuzz from a full on octavia type fuzz, yadda yadda.
so yeah, my recent favorite fuzzes are an mxr 'la machine', (foxx tone machine clone), and a borrowed mxr blue box.
the way i use em' is to NOT use the octave features on them, (on the blue box- blended to non octave, on the tone machine clone- the octave button off).
so my question to those that understand the circuit... what type of circuit is it, (opamp, silicon, etc)?
also, what other fuzzes have the sound these have, (and which are comercially available at this point)?
please offer your input if you can and thanks in advance.
best wishes-
carl

I have an original Foxx Tone Machine which I generally use with octave switch off. I like it very much. It uses silicon transistors. I am not sure what the "la machine" uses in it's circuit. The Tone Machine is sort of like a silicon fuzz with the added octave option, some diode clipping to smooth it out a little, and a tone control. Don't know anything about the Blue Box other than that it uses op amps.

Foxx Tone Machine in non-octave mode is one of my favorite fuzz tones as well. Love it.
