I just got a Kay Fuzztone

Post by oildrops »

I just got a Kay Fuzztone pedal. yeah the cheese orange treedle style. So I decided to sign up for this forum because of it, since no one else cares (well maybe my neighbors after I played it with bass for over an hour). This is my second fuzz, the other one being a "Big Knob NYC '81" which is a Big muff V6 clone. I don't get along with big muffs, and I dig this Kay pedal, but I am looking for something sort of in between. I am torn between the BA zippy or a good fuzz face such as the MJM london. Who knows where my fuzz journey will take me! I might even sell the Kay and buy 2 good modern fuzzes, but will I be able to find the same quality? I mean this thing has 4 germanium transistors and sounds like god is farting down on me when I play it.

yea, you should keep it. If you are looking for an inbetween of a muff and that one (super fuzz family circuit), I would say hit a foxx tone machine. Can be muffy but a little more broken up sounding and has the sickest octave up....

I don't get on with Muffs, either, but do like woofier Fuzz Faces, like original spec big input cap stuff, for fuzz of size. If you want something more of the Muff frequency footprint, Mountainking Megalith is similarly big but feels different because circuit-wise it is not Muff-like at all. FTM suggestion is solid--the non-octave mode is like a midrangey Muff. And there's Tonebenders and Buzzarounds.

Thanks for the welcomes! I've been a lurker for a long time. Just starting to realize how many fuzz demos I watch :D

That Foxx tone machine is WOW. Just so you are aware, I can't actually afford $400 pedals. I just get lucky sometimes.

Yeah I'm thinking I either don't like muffs, or I just haven't played the right one yet.

Do clones ever sound as good as originals? It seems that they always sounds different. Maybe not worse always, but never the same. I seem to have parts of songs that stand out in my head as the ultimate fuzz tones.

it depends on what it is you like about the original. In my experience clones never sound identical to the vintage originals, something about the energy of the pedal is missing in the modern clone. Sometimes a clone is better balanced or has more bass response etc. I tend to prefer the vintage original. :idk:

Often original vintage effects vary from unit to unit as well.
