My friend has a TR-606 and 707. Both are pretty awesome, and we use them in tandem with a Future Retro Revolution.
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

Dude, the MPC is more than just a drummachine, it's a sampler. A fucking awesome sampler at that. Too bad they're so expensive.

depends which one your talking about....2000's and 2000xls prices have been dropping like crazy (i frequently see them in the 400-700 range now). even 1000s u can get for like 600-700 even like 500 if u find a steal (althought im not a big fan of the small pads that like to die on you, my friends has like 4 pads that work...wack)

3000s and 60s are up there, as well as the newer bigger models (2500 and 5000). but with any mpc if you guage the price to what your actually getting its a steal...i love my 2kxl more than life itself. :trippy:

YOW.... are we picking on the newb here.... was hoping suggestions would give me A) something I can obtain rather easily and B) something that doesn't kill my credit.....

these machines are very cool, but what if i'm looking for something more affordable....

Maybe a Roland SP-404SX like the one I have in the spam thread (nudge nudge)?

But for cereal. The SP series is awesome for sampling and drum machine uses. The Roland TR series is quite good if a bit overpriced. The Korg Electribes can be had for relatively cheap and are great for analogesque freakdom. The Roland Groovebox series can also be had for cheap and have some really cool drum machine options. The Zoom MRT-3B is the best drum machine I've ever owned for natural sounding kits and is $99 new. Tons of options out there.

Are you going for a more natural sound or analog drum machine goodness?

thanks for chiming in shoegazer, i'll check those boxes out as well and possibly nudge you back....

i think the natural sounding drum machines don't quite cut it because nothing sounds as real as the real thing, so i don't mind analogue drum machine tones at all and would probably prefer it...

If you're looking for analog drum sounds and can record on a pc, I'd suggest a loop program like Acid Studio ($60) and a couple of drum sample CDs ($75-$100?). You can get some sweet, realistic bashing and also use the loop program for other things, like synth sounds. And there are tons of free loops available on the interweb. You can route the pc sound output through your pa and practice to the loops.

You should be able to get a Roland TR-707 for under $200 I bet. They're on NYC Craig's List quite a bit. Not quite the classic monster sounds of the 808 or the 909, but still plenty good.

For canned rhythm boxes of the older analog variety - the Korg KR-55 and Maestro Rhythm King and hella fun. Prices vary on those though. Roland TR77's are kinda fun too.

If you are pinched by the economy and on a budget , this might do in a pinch with a cheap delay or synth pedal , shrug ...

Circuit bend one of these. Wacky glitchy tones, decent rhythm tracks, and there's tons and tons of bends in this thing. You can find em for about $30 bucks on ebay pretty often. More of a toy or studio thing than a live rig. Unless you're into unpredictability.
