Which lineup should i use for my band?

Post by leoandsound »

Hello people of ILFZZ!

Currently i'm starting a side project with my drummer, we want to make a two piece band dance punk/garage rock with some experimental and noisy sound and we want to decide which instruments we're gonna use, drums and synth are determined BUT THE PROBLEM IS we don't know if it's better use a guitar or a bass, i have both with a pretty suite pedalboard for each instrument but we can decide which will be more useful, after playing for weeks I'm leaning toward the bass we can easily get a huge sound with distortion and separate signals, but obviously the guitar also has some advantages.

PLEASE let me know what you think about it and what will you choose and if you have some recommendation for what pedals, synth we can use that will be awesome and even what band we can check out, we already know Indian Handcrafts, No Spill Blood, Death From Above 1979, DZ Deathrays, Red Blood Shoes, The White Stripes, Little Hurricane, The Inbreds.

Thanks for your help!!!

Use both! Depending on the song. If you have a song where you don't use the lower register, grab the guitar. If you gotta bring the lowz, grab the Bass. You could also try a baritone.

Or better yet, do what I did and get a Bass VI.

No Spill Blood is awesome. I know they used baritone and regular guitar on Heavy Electricity but I think when they play live he just sticks to Bass.

You could also check out Volcanoes. Another 2 piece noisy dancey punk band. And the new Lightning Bolt album has some pretty catchy moments.

Welcome to the forum, BTW.

This! Some additional info,

A Danelectro Baritone is

- About $400
- Available in pretty much any music store, even the shitty ones
- Light as a feather
- Able to really tussle with a fuzzbox
- Potentially your new favourite guitar
- DEFINITELY my favourite guitar

Another option is the Squire Vintage Modified Bass VI

- $300 or less, used, $100-ish
- Old Blood Noise Endeavours uses one :thumb:

This video at 1:52 is one of their numerous demos using it

Always a cool option...

The best option. If I could convince my wife I needed another guitar, I'd get a Bass VI. Hell, I was secretly hoping my old bass was unfixable so that I could say that I needed a Bass VI as a replacement.

That said, in that video, he's playing a Squier VM Baritone JM, not a Bass VI.

Edit: And that antigua finish is ugly as fuck, never get that.

Hi man! and thanks for the welcome.

A Bass VI it's a great idea, actually the other day i play the Squier Bass VI and i really like it the problem is that i read some really bad reviews about the bridge and tuners so i'm scare of buying something that will need much more money to make it work so i'm looking for others brand options.

Wouw Volcanoes are awesome they are pretty much what i have in mind.

Thanks for your comment!

I've read a lot of bad reviews about the Squier Bass VI'S bridge and tuner but i played one the other day in a guitar store and i love the sound of that beast but i don't know if that will be a good investment.

I totally agree with you, that antigua finish is extremely ugly, the sound is awesome but the finish kill the instrument.

I would just go with whichever you are more comfortable with / like playing better. There are plenty of tricks to get either guitar or bass sounding full enough for a duo.

Other cool duos you may or may not already know: Gay Witch Abortion, Vaz (early stuff, don't think they're a duo any more), Big Business (early stuff, not a duo any more), Local H (look past their 90's one-hit wonder-ness)

I just bought heavy strings for my Jazzmaster and tuned it to A

absolutely would start a two piece with that :) or bass, because I like doing chordy shit on bass. There's a few people who can do two pieces with guitar, but I don't know... at least tune really low man (Eagle Twin anyone? )
I make pedal demos as East Stomp Boutique - http://www.youtube.com/c/eaststompboutique

Dads, until recently, was a pretty great Emo/Math-rock duo. :thumb:

I play in a 3 piece noise/hardcore band where bass vi is the only stringed instrument. It's awesome for filling space, especially with both guitar and bass cabs

I second the comfort suggestion. I'm doing a two piece now as well. I tried to go bass because I never play real high on the guitar anyway, but it was definitely not as tight sounding. Unless you are real fluent on both, then my suggestion is moot.

I am looking into some sort of octave pedal to fill it out a bit/at times. I tried dropping low with heavy strings but it feels weird to me any lower than drop B

Anyone know a hardtail bass vi? I don't really want a trem

Well, Schecter makes the Hellcat VI for about $750 street, on sale on their website (US customers only). This model has been endorsed by Robert Smith of The Cure. In fact, I remember reading something around the release of the self-titled Cure record (more than a decade ago, forgive me if I'm wrong) that he only uses his vintage Fenders in the studio now, and retired them on the road, in favour of touring with the Schecter. These are good instruments.
