Most definitely!!!! and the wraps of those times are amazing as they age. One of the best sounding kits I ever played was a early 70's Slingerland in a 26/14/18/20 setup, guuhhhhhh they sound so full and round and deep......

Its all about the round-over bearing edges. I dont think anyone non-custom brand does those anymore-even ludwigs current "vintage" kits still have double 45s which really baffles me- whats the point of marketing a kit as being vintage-style when they cant even sound the same?

That's exactly it! They have this bounce to them that is just not heard or felt anymore.

Gretsch does a single round over on some of their lines, I know my old Catalina kit definitely had em. Poorly done though, they would never stay in tune cause it wasn't flat or even. Hopefully the american kits are better than their import kits.

What would you guys suggest for doom that isn't too expensive that I'd feel like I would have to be a professional drummer to rationalize buying it.

Pearl Export series if your on a budget, if you can stretch it a bit more I say the Tama B/B (Birch / Bubinga) series is phenomenal.

I wouldn't worry about size too much. I'd stay away from 22/12/14 (small average), but no one will be complaining if you're on a 22/13/16 kit. Of course if you can find a nice set with a 24" or 26" bass drum, more power to you. Old Ludwigs/Slingerlands/Gretsch are great. For newer drums, listen to what the real drummers say. The same size issues apply to snares; a regular 5x14 snare will be fine, even for the doomiest of dooms. But should be easy to find a 6.5 x 14 if you want to go that route. Part of my moderate attitude toward drum set size comes from the fact that I'm an inexperienced drummer and that volume can't help you if you can't play that well.

Cymbals are frickin' expensive, but there are millions of old A series Zildjians and AA series Sabians out there used, and some of them are very cheap. Used cymbals may be fatigued/about to break, but new cymbals break too. Don't worry about getting a cymbal with a keyhole-shaped center hole. If you mount it properly it should hold up unless it's really bad, so mildly keyholed cymbals can be a great deal. Any crack, however, will get bigger very quickly, rendering the cymbal unusable. In a pinch, you can get piles of cracked cymbals from people for free, or buy a stack of them for $25. They may sound a little off and they won't last long, but if the price is right, they can be good to bash on.

If you have to buy new cymbals, I like Sabian XS20s because they're cheap and they're cast and they sound good to me. They don't come in large sizes, though. I know many people who are far better drummers than me who play Zildjian ZBTs & ZHTs, Sabian B8s, etc or whatever's cheap. They don't sound as good as more expensive cymbals, but at doom volumes, you're mainly looking for projection and they fuckin' project!

Finally, don't worry about getting too many drums/cymbals at first. I went for a 4 piece, hats and a 20" ride cymbal that I used as a crash/ride. Kept me from getting confused

Found yesterday at practice that I cracked both my ride and my hi-hats at the show on Saturday....

And we go into the studio in a month... :mope:

So the funds that were gonna go to finishing off the Matamp rig now gotta go towards new cymbals...

But fuck it if I'm gonna do it I'm gonna do it right! Figure I might as well replace what will now be the mismatched crash as well. So I'm gonna pick up a Sabian 24" AA raw bell heavy ride to use as my main ride, a Sabian 24" AA Bash Ride to use as my main / left side crash, and a set of Sabian AAX 16" plosion hats (all though they aren't AA's exactly, I think I can quell my OCD hahaha) and then I'll move my 21" AA Bash Ride to use as my right side crash. So it'll be 16" hats, 24" ride and crash, and a 21" crash, fucking DOOM!!!!!

I could also get a 24" AA metal ride and 16" AA metal hi-hats and save about $75... but I'm not sure I like the idea of "metal" cymbals....

So I've got it down to two choices as far as cymbal setups to go for..... (all cymbals are sabian)

A) 16" raw bell hi-hats (pieced together from two raw bell crashes), 24" and 21" Bash rides as crashes, and a custom 24" raw bell heavy ride

or

B) 16" Metal-X Hi-Hats, 20" Metal-X crash, 20" Metal-X China, and a 24" Metal-X ride

due to me all ready having a 21" bash ride the price for both sets is pretty much the same. Its down to whether I want big crashes and more versatility but no china (option A) or I want a setup the same size as I have now but with better quality and more cutting cymbals and a china instead of a crash (option B)
