to me Protest are pretty metalcore :idk:

would never think about Thrice and any connection to emo, they lack the whine/theatricality/melodramatism of other bands mentioned (don't want it to sound like I dislike those qualities, I do with some artist while with others they are key features to liking them). Especially if we're talking Vheissu onwards, love post-Vheissu Thrice (Vheissu included). Also have never made that connection to Minus the Bear for the same reason :idk:

And no way are we dragging The Mars Volta into this

Thrice were pretty much always the 'weird' scene-y band. Like, if there was one active band "scene" kids liked that was tolerable 10 out of 10 times it was going to be Thrice (who are actually boring as fuck live, fun fact). They were definitely marketed to the same folks who liked Coheed and Thursday, and it's not an accident that they were all on the same major when that sort of music was blowing up -- which is I guess Artist in the Ambulance.

TMV is there because it's Santana and Mahavishnu covers by At the Drive in guys I think.

Yeah I don't really expect it to translate at all -- all this music was basically happening concurrently to what I was actually paying attention to, and I only know because there's a lot of overlap/fans of this sort of stuff tend to be fairly evangelical about it (in case you hadn't noticed).

I really like the first two TMV albums and like half of the third. And their circle jerks cover is ace.

I have no idea what all of this is but I love Moving Mountains. To me, they are post-rock.

I guess this thread is the ultimate testament to the fact that genres are pretty subjective. Which is sort of funny since they are supposed to be communication shortcuts

i was just sort of perplexed by that emo prog comment  also i've heard a couple of times about that emo->post-hardcore shift and figured to just start a conversation.

I have to respectfully disagree. Protest lack the abrasive, dissonant qualities of a metalcore band. Also, no breakdowns.
To me, they have much more in common with progressive metal acts, with their heavy emphasis on technical musicianship as well as strong, melodic clean vocals.

On prog emo: I never knew that was a thing. I've always lumped most of these bands into the post-hardcore header.

Post Hardcore is almost as meaningless as emo to me. I like a bunch of bands under that label but there seems to be a lack of sonic consistency.

Exactly. It's just vague enough to satisfy me. Sometimes, I'm just totally fine with calling a band a "heavy rock band."
It's all so silly, yet I will actively engage in it.
