Mini/Fuck vs Barbershop

Post by neonblack »

Has anyone played both that could compare the two? Do they cover similar ground? Would it be worth it to have both? I have a Mini and I'm being EXTRA tempted by a Barbershop in the classifieds.

Simple - Mini = GAINZ - Barbershop = LESS GAINZ

I will never forgive you if you sell the Mini, but I've always been interested in the Barbershop.

Faifield gain sweep is about a quarter of the mini's gain sweep. I do like both a lot and have played both a lot, but the mini more since the barbershop was in a tourbox and I've owned the Fuck and Mini. I like the Fairfield a whole lot, but love the ability to go either heavy or sparkly, not just sparkly.

Yeah, the Barbershop is definitely more subdued than the Mini. It sounds great and has that awesome Fairfield tone but it can't get nearly as crazy or cover as much ground as the SS/BS ODs. It's just a really great sounding overdrive and that's about it.
Haven't tried it on bass or bass VI though so not sure how it sounds with those.

I have the Barbershop and can speak to it's awesomeness. I've also played a Mini, though not extensively, Mini definitely has a lot more gain on tap. The Barbershop is really versatile, covering bright overdrive to darker fuzz with it's sag control. I've tried all sorts of transparent/low gain ODs and this one was my surprise favourite. It does well on it's own and for me is pretty much on 90% of the time, plus it stacks really well with other dirt. I'm a big fan of stacking Barbershop->Fuck, haven't really looked back since. That's what I use on my main board, but like a lot of people here I have a crapload more ODs I switch in and out for the hell of it, and the Barbershop plays well with all of them.

And the Fairfield is made in Canada, so you know it's gonna kick ass!

I think the Barbershop is rad, but I like the Mini better.

Might be more fun to have a Mini and a Four Eyes... so many nice OD tones in that thing, plus the ability to go a lot crazier if you want. All I know is that my Four Eyes is going nowhere.

I didnt really dig the barbershop in bass, unles it was just for that subtle boost sound. The higher gain settings (which are quite low) got a lil farty if I remember correctly.
