Re: Basic audio
Where's Chankgeez?
They just had a tour box go around and viewtopic.php?f=149&t=46555&hilit=fuzz+mutant#p941647.
Seems like pretty good stuff...trying some out next week myself (pepbox, zippy). The sounds from their rat impressed me (as best as a youtube video can, and I ain't a rat fan). A lot of people have said that they have a great sound but I don't know if I would call them "not normal" fuzzes...they are improvements and mods to existing vintage pedals which is pretty cool.
Not "normal" fuzzes: Harmonic Percolator, 88, Tone Axe, Supersonic Fuzzgun, Great Destroyer, Biloma, Roland AD-50 Double Beat...I dunno, fuzzes all have their unique character. What are you looking for? Octave up, gated. weird decay, intermodulation distortion, ring mod tones, envelope, synthy, heavy? Fuzzhugger makes some weird stuff, Subdecay, Lastgasp, Dwarfcraft, etc. do too
Check out Eivind's Osc fuzz demos and UG's demos...tons of good stuff there. Uglyface is out there.

Re: Basic audio
Of those, Zippy is the most "abnormal," imo. I wrote some long-winded reviews of the Zipparipp and Mutant proto a few years back for a previous tourbox, they can speak for themselves and will. At length.
I own a Zippy and will own a Mutant, Cthullhu willing.
Zippy is fantastic and distinct from other "horny" fuzzes; seems to me to be more saxy and less trumpety. But Zippy can do so much more than just the horny thang.
lordgalvar's suggestions on other possibilities are both comprehensive and perspicacious.
Mutant is less audacious but still perty darn versatile, with a fairly unique texture that is both velcroey and tight-more than most fuzzes I've tried it manages the trick of allowing rapid, articulate runs and still maintaining identity as "fuzz" rather than resolving/devolving towards "distortion."
I'm going to stop b/c I'm spooking myself by sounding too much like Splatt/David Torn. (his posts, not his playing)

Re: Basic audio
I'm real excited to finally try the Zippy. I think I am going to like it a lot. The Os Mutantes circuit is really interesting though and seems to have a lot of variants out there and the Fuzz Mutant seems to be a pretty good one. But there are Creepy Fingers and Fredric os mutantes too (and I am sure more)...
Thanks, Dandolin: always with the insight.

Re: Basic audio
BA Fuzz Mutant is one of my favourite fuzz pedals. Yes, it's the Regulus VIII/Mutantes circuit but John tunes it perfectly and the controls give you great versatility. You can use it to add a little colour or as a full-on splatty/sustainy 60s fuzz monster. Stacks really well with other dirt pedals, too. I couldn't live without mine, so if you can only buy one BA pedal, make it the Mutant!

Re: Basic audio
*Rant*
John is a flakey guy. I would never deal with him again. 3 of us (Behndy, Excane and myself) all had bad experiences with him at the same time. He lied about how the pedals were progressing, didn't do what was agreed to do and what was paid for. All 3 of us had him building different pedals, I think all 3 of us sold our pedals immediately out of disgust for how everything went down. It is funny that all 3 of us are bassist.
I know this doesn't directly apply to this thread. If you are buying pedals in stock, etc then you probably won't go through what we did.

I've wanted something from BA for a long time, but I'm not big on fuzz. I ended up ordering a custom 808 from him.

Re: Basic audio
The Zippy is his take on the FY-2 Companion fuzz, though it has a more 'open' fuzz tone to it, and what I'd say are more useful blend controls than you'd expect from that type of fuzz variant. One of my favourite fuzzezz. Very helpful guy too.
