The Sound of Failure
Okay. I guess I'll talk about Failure here.
I've been on a Failure kick ever since I found out about the new album and it's only gotten worse since in the last couple of weeks, especially after the album showed up online.
So, does anyone have their personal preference as to pedals that get you "that Failure sound." The only singular one I can think of that might qualify would probably be the Fuzzrocious Heliotropic, though I don't have one so I wouldn't be able to comment as to how it sounds in real life. I've read that it's a good place to start with a Big Muff (I assume Creamy Dreamer since that's what Greg uses in Autolux), Proco Rat, and some sort of Maestro Fuzz for the bass sound and an MXR Distortion + into a Marshall JMP-1 into a Big Muff into a Twin Reverb for guitar (plus an MXR Phase 90 and Mu Tron Octave Divider).
I know they used a whole bunch of various pedals and other gear either nobody knows about or have forgotten of, but I'm curious what combinations other people have come up with that sound "just about right."

Re: The Sound of Failure
Well I know nothing about Failure, but I Googled to see if there was a Rig Rundown, and there is!

Looking at it... I literally wouldn't know how to use any of that shit
(Yay Autolux though)

Both Andrews and band member Greg Edwards use Fractal Axe-FX II preamp/effects processors for their basses and guitars. (Andrews utilizes a Line 6 Relay G90 wireless system, while Edwards goes straight in with a long ¼" inch cable.)

Yeah, I knew about the Rig Rundown but was disappointed that everything was digital because I sure as hell am not going to go buy a Fractal and download their patches which they offer for a shitload of money as part of the pledgemusic thing.

Re: The Sound of Failure
I actually don't think it's rocket science. Loud tube amps, dedication to being loud, dirty and weird and the right attitude. They do have their unique sound aesthetic, but I don't think it's really the gear.
I mean... My band just had a recording session and we started jamming to warm up, came up with a new song. Major key, pretty droney, but positive and nice, spacy vibe. It started with me playing through octave down into Huge Box II into Elements. Fuzzy, massive and dirty sound that sounds pretty heavy on it's own and wouldn't be my first choice for such a vibey song, but damn does it work well
I'm not changing the sound throughout at all, just the picking dynamics and I dedicate myself to the glitchy sub octave when I pick lightly. Not bragging but I'd say it creates some sort of statement for the song, similarly as Failure uses the weird effects. Just don't worry that it's too much. If used right, nothing is ever too much or too heavy.
also... tell me about it. I'm blown away by the new record. Resonates with me deeply

Why is erryone flippin out over Failure recently??? There were other 90's bands of that ilk... I'm not hatin, just wonderin... Hum too... Is it just that I'm old and it's time for the 90's now or??? Are kids hunting down old CD5's of forgotten 90's Rock Lore???

Re: The Sound of Failure
I am personally glad they are back and that they made a great new record, that to me has a unique "face" or "spirit" or whatever. It's just good to see them not only "still" making good music, but making it "again".
To me it's not nostalgia, I'm genuinely glad they are back, making good rock music.
Granted I was 5 when Fantastic Planet came out, so I do have that sentimental "90's music is cool" attitude I got only when I was a teenager, exploring bands... But I just think they're an interesting band passionate about their sound and production and making cool music at the same time
Also not burnt out from having a massive catalogue of music behind them like certain other 90's bands...
Like... well worth flippin out over, you know?
(it's way too hot for my English or thinking to be on par today)
