I've never heard of these guys, but anyone who names a pedal "assmaster" is okay in my book. :thumb:

Where do the name Bit crusher comes from??

I know it's a song from the mad capsule markets but do it means something special??

My guess, based on what I have heard/read:

I think it refers to the practice of reducing the audio fidelity of a sample by removing/altering bits of data. By doing so, it can make the sound more distorted or jagged.

It differs from ring modulation in that RM is an analog process of taking the sum and difference of two waveforms and adding them to the original (I have heard "multiplied") so that they cross-modulate eachother and end up, well, you know how it ends up - lots of overtones, klang krun ting, that kind of thing.

Bit crushing would be a digital process.

The sample here, however, also has a formant thing going (unless that was the orginal sound, not sure).

My german isn´t as strong is it used to, but from what I could gather it is what suilebhain said. Removing volume spikes or altering them or something. Bitcrushing and clipping seems to have a lot in common :???:

The sound of science!

Your descriptions fit the name (I see the little space invader ships crushing those primped bits), and it also perfectly fits the sound of the Mad capsule markets.

Hmmm, I wonder if Digital clipping is an other word for Bit crushing...

It's not really said the same way (but, hell, where are my german lessons gone??!), but it's the same result.

Bit crusher, being used by a special kind of music (and therefore a whole art movement), has a deep background. So it has a powerfull aesthetic and is linked to a special way of thinking music. (and it must be the only difference with clipping!!)

As far as I know, bit-crushing has to do with... essentially lowering the "resolution" of a waveform... it's similar to clipping in the sort of harsh sound it can generate but what it's actually doing is... think of it as a counterpart to lowering the resolution on an image. Bit-crushing reduces the number of possible values a sound can take over an interval... it has an effect that I'd compare to making the picture more "blocky"... the sound gets "fuzzier" though not in a fuzz-pedal sense, and sort of "blockier" as well. Apparently, bit-crushing is sort of responsible for why stuff sounds the way it does over a telephone... since telephones only have a bit depth of 8, which means there are only 2^8 possible values for any given part of the sound.

I could also be wrong... this is just my impression from tooling around with a bit-crusher effect in FL Studio for a while.

D'oh! I just realized on looking at the titles of the clips: THAT's the Holey Erectus, isn't it? Good fricken lord, I want this pedal so damn bad. I would sell my EHX Bass Synth to get it (sorry baby, but you'd have to go). That has easily made it to the top of my GAS list, and it doesn't even exist in a purchasable form yet. DAYUM! :animal: :animal: :animal: :animal: :whoa:
