Show your Keyboard/noise/whatever table/stand - Need ideas

Post by Faldoe »

I currently have a little platform I built for my laptop, soundcard, etc. It's just a piece of wood with a threaded plumbing flange attached to the bottom and then I'm using one of my drummer's extra boom stands with a straight threaded pipe in it, which screws into the flange.

It works but can't hold a lot of weight. I'm planning on using my Novation K-Station (25 key) a 25 midi controller, some drum machines and Volca Keys on one table platform.

I'm standing when playing, cause I'm also playing guitar. I'm 6'3 and want something that is tall enough where I don't have to hunch over to play the keys/tweak knobs, etc.

If you're standing when playing/performing, what are you using as your table/platform? I should also mention that I want something that is mobile and collapses easily. I was thinking a regular X frame keyboard stand with wood on top that doesn't just rest on the stand but might have some latches or something that makes sure it is secure to the stand. Most of the X stands seem to be too short, however.

Got any suggestions, pics of your setup?

Any sturdy ironing board/card table is my go to. I use a similar amount of stuff to you (microbrute, drum machine, pt-jr, mixer) and I have yet to run out of space.

Ironing board is a good idea! What do you have on top of it and do you have it attached somehow?

I use one a platform style keyboard stand because I've had terrible luck with X stands falling down at the worst possible time.

Before that I used a rolling utility table with locking wheels. keybaord and controllers on top, goodies underneath (like toy rayguns to feed through pickups, slides, extra picks, beverage, other junk that was needed.
Great dealings with: ryan summit, UncleGrandfather, Pizza, hbombgraphics, dangergirlstarship, Clockworker, kosta

Bingo... this was my go-to for tabletop shit that wasn't on a keyboard stand, just hit up Goodwill for a good metal one and toss the padded cover. Bonus points if you paint it black, double-bonus if you embrace the avacado green/harvest gold...

If you're going to use an ironing board, you could also just use an X frame keyboard stand with a piece of wood on top? Isn't the ironing board an X frame stand too? Although the ironing board has good mojo.

I use a portable AV projector stand with telescoping legs, everything collapses
Pros - compact for easy transport. cons, I can take it on the subway. Looks good when set up. Adjustable height legs.
Cons - - you have to set it up and break it down all the time. It's also 60 bucks, a little pricey for a table. The hardware fails eventually, if you use it a lot (after a few years). The table area is not huge (but okay for me).

Can't find a link on Ebay, but that's where I bought mine. Like this, but mine goes about 40" high:

The ironing board, if it is a good one too, has the bonus of having the top piece actually being connected to the X frame/legs.

I was thinking I could get some pipping to put on each of the feet to widen then and increase stability from front to back.

An ironing board may be too wired but I could always cut it and then get a piece of material - rectangular board of some sorts and drill/attach it to the ironing board's attached top. This would work.

Dude, Proline Double X Keyboard Stand and some wood... It's much sturdier then an ironing board which are shitty aluminum... I've got two 2 tier ones with wood that I've used for over a decade and never had a problem with it falling off or over...

I used to use a couple of proline music stands for various side pieces, including a K Station and Electribe. They are sturdy enough for small keyboards and heavier things, basically anything that doesn't hang too far off the sides.

Those look good but max height of 37'' is too low. I need something around 40'' tall.

Is this a jobbing rig? (I mean, are you worried about transporting it? or is it more for one-location use?)

I would be transporting it occasionally.
