Bruce Springsteen, though. I will not bend or break on that one. First seven albums 1973-1986 are one of the most influential and enduring album runs in rock music. First four albums 1973-1978, absolutely flawless. To be clear:

- Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.
- The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle
- Born to Run
- Darkness on the Edge of Town

Absolutely flawless.
Sure, if you ignore the fact that it's fucking garbage.

Never been a big fan of either of those bands. A lot of my friends like them but I think Dookie came out slightly before my time. I was much, much more into Blink 182, if we're talking "sellout" punk bands of the late '90s/early 2000s.

Recent Green Day albums are just like... go home. LOL, u tried.

Dookie came out when I was 16 and they were from the area I'm from so I "wanted" to like them  but I have never really "got" pop punk.. actually I didn't like Slayer either until they did that album which turned me on to classic hardcore punk which was a lot better then Slayer covering it but doorway and stuff :thumb:

Oh, believe me, I "get" pop-punk. Better than all the other genres. Dookie simply isn't that great. What's more, it was the last record they put out that even was pop-punk. After that, it's just rock, whether you like the music or not. I have a softspot for a few American Idiot tunes but alas, chalk it up to (horror of horrors!) nostalgia.

If I can suggest the first two Green Day records, 39/Smooth and Kerplunk!, those are the only records they ever did that were honest-to-goodness pop-punk. The only two I have ever liked TBH. Available on a single CD.

Modern pop-punk like Title Fight, Four Year Strong, Tigers Jaw, etc., owes infinitely more to early New Found Glory, early Brand New, Blink 182, Jawbreaker, Bad Religion, etc., than Green Day. Dookie was a generational thing/moment whereas something like Jawbreaker is timeless.

I get what you mean about "wanting" to like them. Some people would scoff at that but I think it's a legit reaction. I want to like a lot of bands that I just can't get into. Or that I admire as performers but don't like their music.

David Bowie (most of his stuff, and the overall aesthetic) would be a huge personal example. So much #Respect, but so little visceral enjoyment.

I agree with you on him, so many bands I like are heavily influenced by him but I only really like a few songs :idk:

I'd say Insomniac is pop punk, if you were to ignore Brain Stew, which was a pretty haphazard attempt to ride the MTV grunge gravy train, about 5 years too late. I still dig Insomniac though. Barely a standout track on it, but has a buttload of snotty catchy melodies. It's just one big song with the same 3 chords. I have no beef with that.

Pop punk begins and ends with the Hard Ons.
You don't need to hear anything else.

Well not to dis this band but that's just not true!
I could make a list of dozens of records in the genre that are nothing less than essential.
Hundreds if I was a little more self-indulgent.

perish the thought.

Dookie is so fucking legit though. First three green day albums have songs for days.

first three Major albums, I should say, which is first five real albums, or whatever.
