I second the contact/piezo pickup idea. Do you have a looper? What I would do is try recording some ideas with the looper first in the chain and no other effects, then mute the glock signal/unplog it and run the loop through the other pedals - that way you can work on getting the right piezo placement/sound and not worry about unwanted feedback from the piezo running through too much gain.

Yep I have 2 Pigtronix Infinity loopers and plenty of contact mics.

I tried contact mics when I first got my bells - if you attach it to a bar you get a thud (and nothing else) when struck, and if you attach it to the frame you get nothing because the bars are isolated by the felt or rubber strip.

I had no idea you could run pedals through a glockenspiel

Actually, I built some surface transducers specifically to be able to run anything through anything. It works awesome!

i have an old, rusty glock. i would think the attack is too harsh and the overtones muddled with a contact transducer. i use two small diaphragm condensers, which handle the attack and the fast transients. then you could feed a mixer or pedal chain or just add effects on the computer.

I would mainly be using it for layering and soundscape in a studio environment. I don't play out live. I'm like the Beatles in that respect.

I was thinking you could put contact mics on the base possibly and then run it through pedals from there. I'm really tempted to get a cheap one and try that.

I would use omni directional microphones in a quiet space. Stereo XY cardioid LDCs
Then run it through pedal via AUX mixer bus.

Yeah part of the reason I'm currently obsessed with the Mutable Inst. Elements is the possibility of generating crusty cruddy bell/tine sounds without having to lug all my lamellophones around to gigs. It's also one of the reasons I love ring mod besides the sheer chaos factor--the ability to add bell/tine like "inharmonic" overtone pitch content to the attack of notes. (What is the word for that--there's some two bit word for when an instrument produces lots of pitch content that is not harmonically related to the fundamental frequency)....

I got a Ludwig glockenspiel off of Ebay several years ago, wasn't that expensive... maybe 100 bucks? I've recorded with it quite a bit. Ironically enough, the mic I've liked with it most is the Placid Audio Copperphone. I've got a limited amount of mics and just figured hey—I'll run it through everything I've got and see if anything sounds right. I was expecting the Copperphone to sound cool and crusty with the glock, but it actually sounds pretty normal and handles the really piercing nature of the instrument really well. Once you get the thing miked, it's fun as hell to throw on a bunch of effects.

So, I got my wah-wah tube today.



And I filled a metal bowl with water and improvised a mic stand.



Hooked up some pedals...



And created this. This is what I was talking about earlier how I would like to use a glockenspiel. Layering tones and creating drones.
