Anyone have a go-to od/dist pedal?

Post by frigid midget »

My GAS journey led me from one fuzz pedal to the next, leaving me with nothing new to somewhat shape my tone fundaments...

I used to stricly play a two channel amp, with a distortion channel that made regular distortion pedals redudant.

But now I'm smitten with the old Traynor YBA-1 I recently bought. It's got this thick low ends and a snappy attack, which my other amps can't even get close to...

It's really loud though, in a very clean way. No breakup what so ever, at least not untill you get into volume levels that need you to mic up the rest of the band for rehearsels. And as much as I love fuzz, I'm used to adding fuzz to a crunchy amp. I like a somewhat raunchy wooly rhythm tone, and not necessary in a Marshall kinda way...

What's out there cheapish and easily available? I wasn't thrilled about the Mooer OCD clone I had, but at the time I only played it through a vox, which probably is a whole different game. I know lotsa of people really dig the ocd, and going byt the clips I checked, I seems like a safe choice to use on a clean platform.

I also had the Mooer Crunch Box clone at the same time, I liked that one a bit more. More gain, or at least more 'hair', or whatever you call the fuzzy artifacts that that a typical tight overdrive pedal doesn't really have. Didn't really need it cause of the two channel amp and all, so I flipped it

Rats: Lacks low end, and they tend to sound a bit too harsh and scratchy to my ears. On the other hand, none of the amps I used it with weren't as bassy as the Traynor. So as an 'always on' kinda pedal, maybe a Ruetz'd Rat might be worth another try :idk:

Currently my only non-fuzz dirt pedal is a Hotcake, which doesn't have the nice high gain thing that I like. It gets really dark and muddy on the higher gain settings, it's really only good for low/medium gain tones imo.

So is it finally time for me to look for a distortion+ or a DOD250? What about that new DOD Bone Shaker? Overkill for what I need? :idk:
I also have a decent attenuator laying around unused, but even IF that'll help getting nice juicy overdrive out of the Traynor, I'd really rather not rape the tubes too much :s

Sorry this turned into a "which overdrive pedal should I get" type of thread btw :p

For standard ol' rock to high gain, cheap....The Dano Fab Tone.

Replaced my HM-2 back when they first came out.

Rats are good. There seems to be a lot of spaceman aphelions on the market right now, they are pretty prime.

Dano Fab tone is surprisingly useable.

my "go to" right now varies by what I need but:
Modded rat (I think ruetz)
Dream Crusher set low.

I've heard nice things about Dist+ but I think I'd go with EQD White Light which is supposed to be same style but more variable.
Great dealings with: ryan summit, UncleGrandfather, Pizza, hbombgraphics, dangergirlstarship, Clockworker, kosta

I'm just gonna say one thing here: Fuck overdrive.

See what I did there? :)

This is correct. The gain on the Mini goes from boost to crunch to fuzzy at max. I like it at 1-2 o'clock with the bias at noon for a bit of raunch. Also tons of low end on tap.

The DOD 250 is great for rock crunch but doesn't have the range, bass or volume of the Mini.

I've actually been looking for both a mini and a fab tone. The latter shouldn't be too hard to find, its just one of those cases where you seem to trip over fab tones, untill you're actually starting to look for one

Mini: Being in Europe and all, its not too easy to find a bargain for a top jack mini...

Mine's the elements. It does everything I did with the Mini and so much more. It's perfect. Plus, the clean-blend lets you creat cool textures when layering with other fuzzes/ODs/distortions.
