Your Top 5 Fuzz MUST HAVES *make your case*

Post by BLOOD EAGLE »

what are your top 5 MUST OWN fuzzes and reasons why?
They don't have to be ones currently on your board, because let's be honest some of you are a little crazy on the flipping...
But just pedals that you think every fuzz-head should own at some point, they can be vintage or clones...
I'm just looking to make a "bucket list" of fuzzes

1) Tone Bender Mk. I.V - One of the first and best fuzzes ever. The meaner nastier beat your ass and steal your lunch money older brother of the Fuzz Face.

2) Tone Bender Mk II Pro - Because Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and it can bring the heavies like few fuzzes can and still cut through.

3) A good germanium Fuzz Face - Because Hendrix mother fuckers, and way way more.

4) Big Muff of your favorite flavor - David Gilmour, Steve Turner, Billy Corgan, etc... I'm a fan of the Red Army Overdrive/bubble font Green Army Muff type tones, but op amp Muffs are fucking sweet too. I sold my vintage bubble font that I was both sentimentally and musically attached to once I got my BAT LSTR, and I can't think of a better endorsement for a Muff builder.

5) Octavia or Super Fuzz - Gots to have that raunchy octave fuzz.

6) If you can't work with and love a Rangemaster Treble Booster, then I question your manhood. It may not a be a "fuzz", but it's germanium, raunchy as in shank you in the back after giving your mom the clap raunchy, and not easily controlled by the weak or those scared of a little (or massive) volume. And, if you have a problem with that because motherfucking IOMMI, that's why you mealy mouthed quim.

Optional 7 - After that get some more extreme shiz, maybe a parametric filter/eq + fuzz/distortion like the Maestro MPF-1 or Systech Harmonic Energizer or one of their clones, or a Fuzz Factory or Fuzz God, RML Electron Fuzz, Okko Black Beast, or some shit like that.

my experience is way to small to name five must have fuzz pedals.

Skreddy Zero - because its a skreddy, it handles palm mutes and fits with my playing and music.
EQD Hoof - its a nice balanced muff and it was one of my first "muffs" - i am kind of sentimental
Red Witch Fuzz God - for the opposite of fuzz sounds and for some crazy action - same like the hoof, it was one of my first fuzz pedals and i decided to keep it... -yeah

so far, a must have is for me a good muff and some sort of silicon fuzz face for me

LAL 88 Super Oscillo - So many different fuzzsounds hiding in there, and expression control over oscillations is my idea of heaven.
Fuzzhugger AB-Synth (Sonic Shroom) - Versatile fuzz that gets fat without being muffled. The oscillations are beautiful, and very controllable.
Mellowtone Wolf Computer - Master of old school videogame sounds.
Dwarfcraft Great Destroyer - Really cool artifacts, awesome results when stacked after other fuzzes.

Four is my lucky number.

I'd go with a hot rodded tweaked out version of each of my favorite classic fuzz types:

-Fuzz Face: Takes a little imagination to hear actual fuzz face tone inthere, but I'd have to go with the Zvex Mastotron. Heavy and low to the point where it gets dangeruous.

-Muff: Haven't found my end-all-be-all Big Muff yet, but at the moment everything's pointing in the direction of the Supercollider.

-Superfuzz: There's plenty of better copies out there that replicate the real deal, but my favorite is still the FZ-2.

-Tone Bender: That's where I'm lost. Verry little tone bender experience here, but I have high hopes for the Fuzz Bear I'm expection any day now. The vintage tone bender thing probably isn't it's strongest feature, I'm sure there's better clones out there. But don't don't squeel or sputter or oscillate

-Some octave fuzz. Not sure which one. Tone Machine, FM2, Standard fuzz...Only tried a couple clones of those, and I'm not sure how they compare to the real deal.

Hmmm...maybe the top 5 fuzz boners I've personally experienced, in no particular order:

Skreddy Mayo (original)
zVex Fuzz Factory (spam-can)
zVex Johnny Octave 2-in-1
Skinpimp MkI (built by Ryan)
Fender Blender (original)

I used to be really really into the original Foxx Tone Machine, too.

Also, the Chicago Iron Octavian Plus was sick.

I have a problem.

OK here goes:

Fuzz Hugger Algal Bloom XS+ - silicon AND germ? nice...
Fuzz Hugger AB-Synth 5k - fuzz + a controllable self-osc mode
Fuzz Hugger Magic Meter - fuzz in a different way, stacks well
Blackout Effectors Blunderbuss - the muff sound with more knobs
Mellowtone Wolf Computer - the self-oscillating mutant machine

Fuck fuck fuck fuck I wrote a long description of three fuzzes and reasons for me thinking things, and it disappeared cuz I got logged out upon posting. I don't have patience to write it again but here was the list:
Wampler Leviathan
Fuzzhugger suneater
Black Russian Muff modded for mids and clean blend.

I will address the mods however. Blend knobs are mostly used for bassist, but it is a great way to deal with the lack of clarity that muffs can have. I got mine with a HM-2 for clarity in the chords. The mids control switches and knob on mine are great for helping to cut through the mix, but the blend can be used for that to. Any muff with a blend will most likely accomplish more or less the same thing, just thought I'd mention it
