Keep in mind on demos, these types of boxes always get shown as flashier than hell.
That said, about half the presets in the GR-55 are perfectly usable, some actuallly good - just not necessarily the first three that pop up when you power on the unit.
Those are gunning for the symphonic metal guys who represent a bulk of their target market I suspect. Rest of us they know will hack our own patches anyway.

Funny thing about Roland's history with guitar synths: when they still separated guitar and bass (eg GR300 and GR33, GR700 and GR77), they consistently made the bass versions waaaayyyyy better. The GR700 used one processor to make sense of all the strings whereas the GR77 used one for each string.gordian knot wrote:oh, whoops - that already got covered
yeah pitch to glitch just isn't very good.
the GR-300 didn't really take that route, which is one reason it still is nice, but the 700, etc sucked donkey ballz
All pessimism aside, I can't wait for the SY300 to make it into the wild.
I play guitar and modular synthesizer in Juggable Offense.

Why so pessimistic at all? Once it's in the stores go there and try it. That beast is so much better than I expected! If it weren't that expensive I'd buy it on the spot!

Yea, I'd expect it to do what it says.
I love my GR-55, but it's based on a generation ago's processor/effects. Still *very* serviceable with many options, I'm still finding new sounds almost 4 years deep.
It helps I have an extremely versatile guitar as the pickup host - so it does a metric ton on its own and the processor and synth are just icing on an already make me happy cake.

Point well taken. I'll probs exercise my usual discretion and wait to see what sounds some more like-minded users come up with before committing, bc, however good a deal it might be, it is beaucoup francs. I doubt I'll be able to reach a decision point in the typical Guitar Center tryout conditions, and I don't want to hear those honeyed words--"take it home, you can always return it within 30 days."rfurtkamp wrote:Keep in mind on demos, these types of boxes always get shown as flashier than hell.

Yes the GR700 sucked pretty badly at tracking, although the synth engine was actually decent. The GR300 tracks great, but the synth engine is kind of lame. This SY-300 could be my answer. I've also tried the Red Witch Synthotron and the Pigtronix Mothership. I liked the tracking on the pigtronix for the most part.

Boss Youtube channel posted some videos yesterday of artist written patches, more promising tones than the factory default patches.
