any advance word on the boss sy-300
It looks like they are trying to fit back into the gr-300 in terms of footprint and maybe relative (I use relative because things have long since moved on) complexity or at least marketing position

Re: any advance word on the boss sy-300
The VGuitarForums.com guys seem very impressed with what they've found out and heard about it. Price has seemed a bit prohibitive to me compared to the GP-10, but if the hex pickup is a no-go, then the SY-300 becomes a reasonable proposition.

Waiting to see the first serious demos and the manual
I could see using it *with* the GR-55. But I'm wrong in the head.

The overview part of the user manual is posted over on Vguitar, the in depth parameter guide part is not available yet. I pre-ordered one based on what I've seen with how well it tracks, fingers crossed that some decent sounds are possible.

Yea, I need to see the in-depth before pulling the trigger or considering it.
I certainly don't need one but...I could be tempted!

Is it trying to do pitch to glitch triggering? (pretty ballsy considering polyphony over one channel, but then there are those polytuners now) or is it more processing?
I mean hell, the Gr-300 was sort of on the line itself with those tracking oscillators

I only heard one demo, one thing I've never really liked was that "crystal shimmer" sound Boss/Roland seems to like to use (I believe it's a form of pitch shifting and filtering to create that "upper harmonics" overlay)
I'd sure like just a straight ahead substactive synth architecture with regular ole osc and filters

I wasn't excited by the demos. I think I'd rather have an expanded version of the HRM synth stuff in the VG-99 without the slave-to-13-pin part. Though, knowing me, that is probably a totally ludicrous notion from a technical standpoint.
But, as long as I'm being ludicrous, what I really want is this, in pedal-board friendly form, and seamlessly triggerable by magnetic electric guitar pickup output:

Holding out for that ought to ensure I live a long time....

I tried the SY-300 for ~3 minutes at the Musikmesse Frankfurt. It is an AWESOME unit! I don't know how they did it, but it reacts exactly like it should. There's an instantly processed synth tone when you hit a string and even with ALL SIX strings hit at once - no matter if you strum a dissonant chord or something simple - there's no glitch or delay or whatever. This unit was one the best pedals I've tried in Frankfurt.

My assumption is it's an evolution of the wave synth in the GT-100/001, which is actually pretty damn good. It just doesn't have much depth of editing by comparison, and doesn't go even vaguely subtle.

More than likely Roland is copying the methodology of the EHX B9/C9. Intelligent filtering combined with extreme processing via FFTs and other delicious shit. I'm willing to bet the cost of the pedal that it's not converting pitches to MIDI/traditional synth control signals. Even Roland has to realize that that shit's fucking garbage and a dead end until we reach the singularity. The only sounds that felt natural to play on the VG99 were the ones that essentially did that exact thing. I forget what they were categorized as but they were essentially individual processing of each string individually to make really obnoxious bwappy bwappy fart noises but they had potential.Pepe wrote:I tried the SY-300 for ~3 minutes at the Musikmesse Frankfurt. Yeah, I think they call that HRM....
My problem with the demos is what rfurtkamp refers to as failure to "go even vaguely subtle" and someone else on ILF, I think, referred to as the tendency of guitar synths to excel at making puking noises (or was it noises that make you puke?) Which is certainly part of the history and mystery of synths, but just the tip of the possible iceberg....

well, Roland's been doing that heavy processing kind of stuff for quite some time the HRM (harmonic restructure modelling)in the VG-8 for example (weirdly, they feature stripped it for the VG-88, but I think it might have made a comeback in the 99...but I haven't used thatmoogboy wrote: More than likely Roland is copying the methodology of the EHX B9/C9. I actually like the VG-8 quite a bit -- well for some stuff anyway

Re: any advance word on the boss sy-300
oh, whoops - that already got covered
yeah pitch to glitch just isn't very good.
the GR-300 didn't really take that route, which is one reason it still is nice, but the 700, etc sucked donkey ballz
