Pre Amp Gain delay and verb pedals?
I know this is a topic that's come up many times before as far as pedal placement on pedal boards but I haven't seen much discussion on pedals that sound great before a high gain amp. Over the weekend my new to me Matamp arrived and its a thick as shit gain monster but I want a good verb for some gazey washes during tremolo picking parts and I want a good subtle but trippy / psychedelic delay that would be good for leaving always on (so something that adds to the tone but doesn't mask frequencies easily).
I was thinking a Ghost Echo for the verb, but I'm kinda lost on a delay choice for what I'm looking for. I've currently got a Behringer VTM but it masks high end frequencies easily and alters the base tone too much, I'm thinking a digital delay might be a better option but I'm not quite sure.
This would be for uber fuzzed out psychedelic doom with some shoe gaze / boot stare influence's.
What say ye oh brethren of the fuzz?

Kind of a boring answer, but way back in my amp gain days I used a Boss DD-20. Seemed to work pretty well!

That, the DD-5 and the RE-20 are on the short list, kinda thinking the RE-20 for the built in verb though....
But your right they are kinda boring so

Aidan Barker uses a headrush (before a PA so totally not relevant but damn that dude has a massive guitar tone).

Okay... if you are considering Boss and it's for gazey washes... maybe also consider the DD7 because it's a lot like the 5, but also has a pretty nice "reverse"-mode (and so much more)?

Re: Pre Amp Gain delay and verb pedals?
I just traded my headrush off a week or two ago to finalize my PA system (got two yamaha 18" subs plus a power amp and all the cables for it!).....D.o.S. wrote:Aidan Barker uses a headrush (before a PA so totally not relevant but damn that dude has a massive guitar tone).
Tap tempo would def be nice though, I just didn't like the mix control on the headrush whenit was pre dirt it was either not enough or too much there was no inbetween.
Mmmmm good call, maybe even an RV-3 for them ambient tones.DADGBD wrote:Okay... if you are considering Boss and it's for gazey washes... maybe also consider the DD7 because it's a lot like the 5, but also has a pretty nice "reverse"-mode (and so much more)?
I find it funny that most of the suggestions have been BOSS pedals, which is what came to mind for me as well....

Dude RV3 and a DD5/6/7? (Also do you want my Headrush? I'm getting rid of it anyways)

Has anyone tried a EQD Dispatch Master pre dirt? Any thoughts? Thinking of pairing it with a Ghost Echo.
Thanks man but I need something that will fit on a PT mini.BoatRich wrote:Dude RV3 and a DD5/6/7? (Also do you want my Headrush? I'm getting rid of it anyways)

Ahh true, have you looked into the T-Rex digital delay? It has like 3 seconds and tap with tempo divides in what looks to be a sideways MXR box

I really enjoyed my Sunny Day Delay before fuzzes and overdrives.

Hey I have an RE-20 for sale if you really want one. It's awesome and gazey but I haven't tried it before dirt. I can if you're interested!
Full disclosure: the reverb on it is pretty weak though.

Re: Pre Amp Gain delay and verb pedals?
Timebender for delay. Costs about as much as a dd-20 but can do loads more. The RV-3 is cool and all, but to be real honest, I'd pick up a cathedral instead. Both do that colder digital reverb sound, even though RV-3 is more in the digital realm. Reason why I say cathedral are the extra modes (and it does also do reverb+ delay) and the infinite switch, and I find that it works nicely before gain. EHX may not be the brand of choice around here but I like it.
Also: the DE-7 seems to do what you seek. At least that's how I picture it in my head. Digital and easy to make it sit on oscillations. Someone else will have to attest to this though

I was sure I'd seen these on reverb new for 150 but whatever.
I have the older version (MD3) and it has insane headroom and up to 2 seconds of delay. New version has true bypass and a tone knob, which the older one needed as it was a very, very faithful replica of the input signal - such that it was hard to get it to sit right in the mix. But you can hit that with anything and it won't clip.

Re: Pre Amp Gain delay and verb pedals?
Thanks for the suggestions guys!!!! I'm gonna watch demo's later tonight!
A friend also brought up a way that I might be able to turn it into a 2 channel amp with some clever routing, which would eat up alot of space on a PT mini so I might have to go with a singular pedal time effect, which for me would most likely end up being either an RV-3 or a ghost echo.... not quite sure yet... still gotta find out if the idea works and if it would basically turn it into a 2 channel amp or not.
