I need a "lighter" fuzz that plays nicely with chords

Post by Wizard »

i need a "lighter" fuzz (not like a huge wall of sound thing like a really pissed sort of overdrive) that plays very nicely with chords and has a pretty even frequency spectrum. Lately i'm really into that sort of "transparent" sound, NW has got me fuckin' HOOKED on the menatone Red Snapper (shit sounds like my dream OD) but i want it in fuzz form too! i want that buzzsaw sound, but i want my chords to come through clear.

obviously i'm no good at describing this.

thats all i got.

GO.
I've got a fuzzbox and i'm not afraid to use it

I find that my Algal Bloom does that really well. Keeping the gain knob before noon and rolling back on the Trim knob, you get some really fantastic overdrive. I could do up a quick video if you want. The AB sounds freakin fantastic with all sorts of chords.

Hmmm, i guess i'll try that on my AB-synth tonight, i have tried getting lighter fuzz with it, but man, all i wanna do is crank it and let it melt the fucking world in half.

While I don't own one, from everything I've heard, the Algal Bloom could well do the trick. Also, I think NewarkWilder was talking about developing a circuit that could do a really nice light, fluffy, dreamy fuzz that would work with chords. Of course, I don't know anything about where that is in the development cycle... so AB might be your best bet for now.

don't know if you like muffs, but the EQD hoof is really good at retaining clarity through all the muff 'n' fuzz. It's definitely fuzzy, but has the tightness and definition of a light distortion. I'm not sure if I'd call it "lighter" though...you can definitely dial back the fuzz a bunch below 9 o'clock on the gain knob, but it's pretty thick from the get-go.

red llama works pretty well for that sound... change the input/output caps or have one made/modded for you to allow a little more bass through. can get really nicely fuzzy while still letting notes ring through...

I second the aforementioned Electric Brown and Rat.

All Rat is good... I think the 308 has just aquired Mojo status... best thing to do would be just get one then socket the chips out untill you found what you liked... you could get a non 308 one and try one in it if you had to know.
