Analog Drum Machine under $150

making drum sounds w/ your synth is not as easy as it sounds. its totally possible but involves more tweaking or more knowledge as to what u are tweaking.
plus u need those snappy fast envelopes that not all synths have.

also, most of them will only give u one sound at a time, so unless u have like a sampler or something to dump the sounds onto its not gunna be a full on drum machine,, boom clack bip blip all that shit. u would need some kinda of multi-timbral synth, which is basically what an analog drum machine is

btw, not to be offensive, I am generally curious, but what is your fetish w/ analog?

I dunno, I would use pedals and stuff and make dirty drum sounds that I liked. I do agree about the snappy envelopes. Sampling was always better, but I did like my FM synth sounds too. I does take a while to get to where you need to go though.

its weird to me b/c lots of "analog" gear, actually has a lot of digital in them. digitally controlled circuitry. microprocessors, etc.

i suggested the sampler because if u make drum sounds on your synth. like say u make a bass drum. you're only gunna be able to play that bass drum up and down the keyboard. u can't like also make a hi-hat on another key, and a snare on another unless u have a multi-timbral synth. so u could make each individual sound and then sample it onto your sampler and make a sweet drum kit!

Yea. Honestly my favorite drum machine is the HR-16 (or b) with the stock sounds. It think for th price that one or the SR-16 can't really be beat. I have heard crust and hardcore bands where the use a SR-16 and some effects and it sounds pretty damn good. The amount of tweakbility in the Volca versus some of the digital drum machines is very, very slim honestly. Melt Banana uses a digital drum machine on their recordings }(even cell scape) and it sounds pretty bitchin' to me.

The sounds on my FB01 were pretty cool too and it was a cheap easy platform to run stuff through filters and stuff. You'd get a full synth and drum machine out of that for like $60.

Hell, I'd rather have a Fizmo or a cool vector synth than most analog synths.

I do the same thing. Like I used to read about things and think "oh, most amazing thing ever" and get it, use it once, and regret it. Because of the interface or whatever (MPC1000 is one example...I just don't care about menus and stuff anymore after getting so pissed off at my S330.

A good sampler you can understand can go a long way to helping with drums though. I think more importantly about drum machines sometimes is how you program it. My Kawai R5 is weird to program because you really can't see what you are doing and it makes it hard even though the sounds are good which is what I think you were getting at.

A SID based synth or an old commodore, though not analog, can makes some good drum sounds. Heck, midibox has schems to make a PCM based synth/drum machine out of those old Sound Blaster cards (they also have an awesome sequencer design).

I have no idea. I really don't. It has nothing to do with the sound. I guess I just like the idea of having an analog anything much better. I've been trying to get over it, I want to be able to use digital things so bad, but for some reason I won't let myself.

I'll probably (hopefully) get over it in the next year.

As far as recording it into a daw, I guess I'm still thinking for some sort of live use I can keep that all analog thing. I know its really, really, really stupid, but I know I won't be nearly as happy with any sort of analog synth as opposed to a digital or hybrid.

Also, I know the microbrute has some digital parts. I'm trying to force myself to not think about that.

nah dude, the SID chip has a analogue filter. Which is what makes it so delicious. Digital filters don't sound the same, and don't try to tell me they do. I've never heard a decent 12db LP filter done digitally. Nord, Access, Waldorf, none of them do the same thing as a real analogue filter. But analogue for analogue's sake is stupid. The cheapest good drum machine you can get is your computer.
