Analog Drum Machine under $150
This might be unrealistic, but I wanted to see if there was anything out there. I don't need anything fancy. Just a simple analog drum machine.

Pots, pans, and trash cans. I guess those are mechanical.
Volca, there is the delptronics lbp-1 used maybe. Maybe a used akai rhythm wolf, but I would go with a volca first.
Maybe you could find a grey gameboy and nanoloop for under $150. That would be analog.
Maybe try to find one of those old ones that sat on top of organs or the old preset korgs, etc. You might be able to pick one up for under $150. I think that was what kraftwerk used early on and they modified them with metal contact pads that completed the circuit (made a sound) when touched with metal drum sticks. Could probably make one take CV if that is the case.
The other option is to go old school and use a synth for it's intended purpose: synthesize your drum sounds.

Alright, thanks for the suggestions. I actually just realized I'm going to be getting a microbrute soon and I've heard you can get some good drum sounds out of that, and along with the step sequencer it's basically a drum machine.

Isn't the volca beats only half analog?

I got so excited when I first looked up the rhythm wolf, it looked like exactly what I was looking for. But then I read the reviews.

I did all of this. And I was all like "nawww... it's can't be that bad!"Seten wrote:I got so excited when I first looked up the rhythm wolf, it looked like exactly what I was looking for. But then I read the reviews.
I was right. It's not that bad.
It's worse.

Geez, I didn't even realize. I thought "if I ever see it for $75 used, why not"...but it is that bad, eh? Crazy.fever606 wrote:I did all of this. Akai really is shit (don't finish the mpc 1000, make shitty new mpcs).
I appologize then, haha.

There are a few PCM samples, but not the main instruments.Seten wrote:Isn't the volca beats only half analog?

Honestly, some digital ones offer just as much tweaking and sound pretty good.D.o.S. wrote:What difference does it actually make to you?Seten wrote:Isn't the volca beats only half analog?
Take a look at the Alesis HR-16. You can change the sounds in that thing like crazy. People burn new eproms full of sounds all the time (SID, CR77, 808, 909, Stock Alesis Sounds, hybrid chips...). It's easy to mess with too.

Re: Analog Drum Machine under $150
making drum sounds w/ your synth is not as easy as it sounds. its totally possible but involves more tweaking or more knowledge as to what u are tweaking.
plus u need those snappy fast envelopes that not all synths have.
also, most of them will only give u one sound at a time, so unless u have like a sampler or something to dump the sounds onto its not gunna be a full on drum machine,, boom clack bip blip all that shit. u would need some kinda of multi-timbral synth, which is basically what an analog drum machine is
btw, not to be offensive, I am generally curious, but what is your fetish w/ analog?

Re: Analog Drum Machine under $150
Yeah exactly -- and you're going to be recording it to a DAW anyway, so there's no reason to try and preserve 'real analog purity.'
I think analog is basically a codeword for "sounds like a classic piece of kit" at this point. Which I totally get -- 808's sound fucking awesome, but they're only 'classic' because so many great records have been made with them.
