I suck at looping. Do you?

Post by neonblack »

So I was playing around with my ditto, looping really short phrases, like double tapping the loop switch to capture just a split second of looping.

Well, I did it once and the light flashed red a couple times and now my Ditto is suddenly a glitch looper. Its playing everything back at a slower speed and stuttering and generally sounds lo fi and janky.

I know you guys are thinking, Awesome! MOAR GLITCH

But it doesn't actually sound that good.

Is there like a factory reset or something I can do to this thing?

Is there a factory reset on the side or back?? I thought for some reason I saw one? I can't remember though.

Awww shit!

Thanks man!

Unfortunately I have to wait till tonight to test it. Gotta work.

I suck at looping anyways. Probably gonna flip it.

This is now the how to not suck at looping thread!

To clarify, I suck at it because I bore the shit out of myself when I do it. I don't know how to make my loops interesting, or evolve over time, or any of that stuff. I listen to people like Mylets and Tera Melos and they're awesome at it, but I just end up looping something for 5 minutes and noodling over it. Haven't written anything that I would consider a good use of looping.

could just throw a whammy after the loop pedal. I recommend 2 octave up for best effect

It's hard to make good music with a looper, IMO. If you try to do a complete band type thing (lush and complex parts) it can get cheezy real quick. What about doing more minimal stuff, or just using it for certain sections of a song.

You could also use it as a practice tool (solo over chord changes, or play chords on guitar then jam on bass, etc etc).

maybe try looping like I do - just finding sounds/atmosphere while improvising?

The CT5 is the only looper I can really get along with because in modes 2 and 3 I just use it for cut up glitch or kind of like a stuttery freeze that sits behind whatever I'm playing for a bit of ambience.

When it comes to actually looping musical parts together to make a whole song, yes I suck at it. Absolutely love what bands like Russian Circles and Brontide do with loops but I'm not clever enough to do any of that.

I occasionally lay down a chord progression on the timebender to jam along to which is fun for practice but that's about the limit of what I can manage.

Maybe it's not you, OP. Loopers with dedicated rec and play/stop switches are the way to go.

Its the X2, so it has separate switches.

However, I'm thinking ct5 is the answer to my woes.

Not sure if I suck, probably I do though.

For live looping I use the "pre" feature on the Timeline and I just loop simple rhythmic stuff that I manipulate with Timeline and Space presets and then I slowly fade it out with an expression pedal as soon as my main playing starts. Too cheezy I know.
In the middle of a song I loop random things when I'm doing "leads" and I just put them on the background, I stop it when I feel it's getting too crazy or when the next part kicks in.

At home I use the mobius looper and that thing is just amazing. I can be there with guitar -> mobius alone the entire day and never get bored.

I'm not going to lie. I suck at looping too. :(

My favorite is playing with one with a reverse. I love the crazy tones it makes.

When I loop, I feel like I'm just playing riffs on top of each other. I don't feel like I'm making music.

In fact I feel that way in general most of the time...

They're cool before other effects, too, for finding sweet spots or really "playing" pedals. And, the features in the X2 make that extra fun.

One way not to suck at looping (which I do to) is to record a few seconds of silence, hit overdub and let it run and then do swells and shit into it. That is, if you like ambient. I made a track that is exactly this, if you're interested
