modern Mellowtone Wolf Computer?

Post by tuj »

OK I feel like an idiot but I have only just become aware of and in awe of this pedal. Sweet lord that is ILF.

Seems like Tom did a run of these in 2010. Does anyone know:

-a modern clone that sounds good?

-if anyone has the license to the original (Tom??) and plans on doing another run?

If neither, or perhaps rather, what other pedals in this vein might you recommend. The *essential* thing for me is to be able to get useable and musical fuzz at some point on the controls. But I also enjoy sonic explorations, oscillations, studder/sputter as long as its not at every setting. Recommendeth some fuzz plz!

The Wolf Computer always sounded like the middle ground between the zvex fuzz factory and the devi truly beautiful disaster to me. But it was way more useable and controllable. The texture was so perfect. Damn I want one.

yeah dude, that's what I'm saying. I was spoiled seeing a good demo of it last night. Useable and controllable are key features for me, its got to be stable.

The schematic looks pretty simple from what I found googling. Are the transistors hard to get or something?

Just a heads up. There is a NOS Mellowtone Wolf Computer for $135.00 on the Fuzzhugger website. Just look in the "other pedals" catagory.

I think I remember Tom putting that one up quite recently.
There's two Wolf Computers in the B/S/T by the way, only one is the larger standard issue and the other is built into some sort of mega-pedal.

Also look for the Mr Wire Fox Calculator maybe, as far as I know he went out of business as well but there might be some of those floating around somewhere.

As far as other oscillating fuzzes go, the Parallel Universe is said to be similar in some ways though also difficult to obtain, the Super Sonic Fuzz Gun seems quite fun to me and the Rainger FX Dwarf Bitch is a really cool unit capable to get tones that are sorta similar to a Wolf Computer in it's own way.
The Shoe Pedals Silver Apple is said to be based on the Wolf Computer as well.

That's about as much as I can think of in that realm.

I would be very excited if this were true, but I don't believe that it is.

I'm assuming we are looking at the same schematic, because it is super simple. It's just a transistor boost into a slightly modded fuzz face with a bias control and voltage starve. The 2n3904 transistors indicated on the schem I saw are about as common modern day NPN silicon transistors as possible. They literally cost $0.02 at tayda:

It's crazy that this thing sounds so good.

I'm in your boat-saw that WC on fuzzhugger.com a while ago, but I was in search of a custom--do want Wolf Computer in my life in a way I never quite felt about Fuzz Factory or Ab-Synth. So why didn't I do something about it? And now Mellowtone is gone, oh why, God, why? I'm going to leave now and have a little telenovela moment.
