I've never owned or tried one of these but I'm glad I saw it recommended here
I have always been intrigued by the versatility of this pedal
I fear that maybe it won't work well with my amp though
is it very transparent?

It can be, but the many tone controls get touchier the higher the gain gets. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It's pretty transparent (if you want it to be) on the cleaner settings, then really wants to add some lower midrange, depending on knob settings as you crank it.

thank you for reply,
this is good to know
I have an amp that gets along with lower midrange
it's an orange thunderverb
I will likely pick up one of these fairly soon

probably too late in the game but DopeFX Black Lotus is the best OD ive ever used:

Although now it comes with added features:

ImageDopeFX Black Lotus by ThorZ666, on Flickr

DEPTH - Adds overall thickness and gain (use together with Bite)
TONE - Darker or brighter
BITE - Adds gain and top-end bite or dial it back for a cleaner and smoother tone
DIRT - Dials in the amount of overdrive
VOLUME - Output level
MODE - Two modes, The standard 'Dumble' type tones or a cleaner, louder mosfet style drive.

And if you REALLY want you can ask the maker to supply a low gain version.
Im not back. Im just front

Yep. Really want to try one some day soon…
But really, there are so many "flavours" of OD these days it's hard to know what to suggest.

+100 Clean boost to many (not 50, but some) shades of dirtiness. Its expensive though, but the build quality is top notch.

Coldcraft's Cascade MKII is a good one too and can say the same about the quality, plus I think it is around 130$ for the B-stock version
