Another note about the Squier Jazzmasters (VM or JM), if you pick one up at a decent price and don't love it you're almost guaranteed to not lose much in selling it off for something else. The used ones I see selling are going for close to the price of a new one so not much risk in trying one out.
I've got a Mascis and love it. I read all the forums before getting it and expected to make all kinds of changes also but haven't touched a thing on it since getting it. It's fun and the neck really does feel great. (and I'm one of the few that actually likes the color and pickguard )
