I've got a Mascis and love it. I read all the forums before getting it and expected to make all kinds of changes also but haven't touched a thing on it since getting it. It's fun and the neck really does feel great. (and I'm one of the few that actually likes the color and pickguard

Another note about the Squier Jazzmasters (VM or JM), if you pick one up at a decent price and don't love it you're almost guaranteed to not lose much in selling it off for something else. The used ones I see selling are going for close to the price of a new one so not much risk in trying one out.
