EHX Digital Delay?

Post by colossus »

Does anyone know anything about the 2-second digital delay EHX supposedly released in 81, 2 years prior to the 16-second? It's referenced here: http://www.ehx.com/blog/ehx-flashback-1 ... cond-delay

I've literally only found one other picture of one. Was this even released?? Was it released in 1981, two years prior to the DD-2 which is often considered the first digital delay stompbox??

Halp, nerds.

Yeah with Magna storage (whatever that is) i've seen one on ebay before, there's likely relatively few of them as is with the 16 second digital delay, at the the time it was likely VERY expensive.

I think EHX had some issues with the early digital stuff if I recall from an interview (although that may have been about the Guitar Synth) that may have led to lots of broken units, recalls etc.

I'd have to find the schematic and look through the old price lists to know any more.

Edit: I was right about the very expensive bit, if you look at the ad there, the price was $690... in 1982 dollars.

Hmm. That info does help. But I still can't find the year that it was actually released.

Oh if that's what you're interested in, i'll dig in to it tomorrow.

Schematic will help as EHX ones are usually dated... I have a contact

Dude....that would be awesome!

I just know, per that ad, that it was "introduced" in 1981. As for what exactly that means, who knows. I'm really trying to find out if it beat the DD-2 to market. It's just weird that there seem to be none floating around. I can barely find any forum postings about them at all. I love this stuff because it's an area rarely discussed, but so important in the broader history of music...the history of guitar effects. Any help you can offer would rule.

I've asked him by the way, he says he doesn't recognise the name but is going to have a look through his schematics.

I would suggest you see if you can find a 1982 dealer price list, it's not listed on my one from 1981 but I don't know what month it's from.

If it helps, the product number for it is EH-7870.

I suppose it's possible that it was never actually officially released and was just developed in to the 16second model, while I have seen one on ebay, may be it was just a prototype? They do show up occasionally, i'd never even heard of this one until I saw it http://www.effectsdatabase.com/model/eh/polyrhythm

Oh and I think the issues I mentioned were actually with the 64 second digital delay.

Only other idea is to contact the designer, i'm not certain but I suspect it was John Williams (not the Star Wars one :P ) his contact details should be on EHX as the UK repair centre.

The Boss was certainly the first to market in any numbers.

I'm still amazed they managed to fit that original thing in the box given the size of the CPU at the time.

No such luck with my contact, he may have a product list of what they were producing in the 80s but can't locate it at the moment.
